I try to teach the student as much as the material. In other words, my approach depends a lot on what a student needs from me. Who is this student? Do they need help with study skills? Are they having issues with motivation? Or do they need to have the material presented in a different way? School can produce a lot of anxiety in students, especially with so much riding on education as a pathway to one's career. I often find that if I can help a student to slow down, not panic, and look a little more closely at the words in front of them, they will discover how to move past wherever they are stuck.
I studied Classics in graduate school at Johns Hopkins and USC, where I taught Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical literature. After receiving an M.A. in Classics, I began teaching English to immigrants and international students in Los Angeles. In addition to teaching English listening and speaking skills to aspiring actors, musicians, and dancers, I taught many students how to write effective university applications and essays, and how to prepare for the TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT exams. For a number of years I taught in the American Language Center at UCLA Extension, and after relocating to Sacramento, in the University Writing Program at UC Davis.
