Teaching should always strive to move beyond the simple sharing of facts and knowledge or even the training of a certain skill set. My teaching philosophy is based on this quote by William Butler Yeats, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." Effective teaching requires the instructor to create conditions that enable students to learn as much as they can through active pursuit. For me this means, making sure that the course materials are student friendly, encourage high student involvement, motivate and foster excitement about the materials and classroom environment and stress active learning rather than grades. In my classroom, students are an active part of the learning process where we don’t simply memorize information, we take the time to discover and investigate it as well. My goal as the instructor is to find out the passion that each student has for the subject material and enhance their knowledge and excitement about the material.
