My teaching method would include story writing, game scripts, writing books, and a better grasp of the English language.
I have worked for the past 45 years as an advocate for troubled youth. I began my career when still in high school, serving as a street contact for a runaway shelter. It was during my time as a worker at a detention facility for delinquent youth, that I began writing stories for the residents. When kids began asking for sequels to my works, I knew I had discovered a way to communicate and connect with troubled kids.
As a mediator for my own truancy program, I provided wake-up calls for a wide mix of state wards and alternative students. As an English/Drama instructor, I once produced a substance abuse program which had an impact on 15,000 at-risk kids at a YMCA summer camp. I believe, though, that my greatest accomplishment can be summed up in the words of one troubled boy who wrote to me from an institution: “Discovered your book today. It was like reading a letter you wrote directly to me. It not only changed my life, it saved it. Thanks for giving me hope.”
During my time as an instructor for Multicultural Affairs for the University of Nebraska, I helped my 8th grade students create their own booklets and direct and act in a play I had written for them.
As a Gifted Mentor, my three 8th grade students and I designed a script for a video game, which was almost accepted by EA, Electronic Arts.
