Award-winning college art + art history + professional practices professor teaches YOU how to be an artist!

Methodology

I offer art (studio), art (professional practices), and art appreciation (history/theory) classes to students from ages 14 - 114.

I take a hands-on approach - even over Zoom - to help lifelong learners develop successful studio techniques and strong critical thinking/discussion skills.

Using integrative online tools such as YouTube and Adobe Creative Cloud alongside hands-on material-based lessons and meaningful discussion, I prepare students at all levels to become the best possible artists and arts professionals that they can be.

Whether you're looking to develop a college-ready portfolio, spark a new era in your art making, promote creative critical thinking for your child(ren), or simply enrich your life, I'm here to help!

Background

I am a college art professor and practicing artist specializing in printmaking, portfolio development, professional practices, oil painting, and art appreciation. I have extensive experience helping artists of all ages develop their artist statements, studio habits, and technical skills. Whether you want to learn how to make prints at home; discover what your work is really "about"; learn how to be a professional artist; develop a portfolio for school applications; or dive into art history to enrich your knowledge, I can help.

Rates

Rate for online lessons : $15/h
Rate for 5 hours of lessons : $18
Rate for 10 hours of lessons : $15

Details

Lessons purchased in the form of topic-based classes (ex: linoleum printing) generally run from 1 - 4.5 hours at a rate of $20/hour.

If you'd like to purchase more hours up front, to be used for multiple teaching topics (ex: screen printing lessons that run for 3 hours/day, 2x per week, for four weeks), then my rate goes down depending on the number of hours I will spend with you or your child(ren).

Webcam-based classes are always $15/hour, but studio-based art classes are only available via webcam on a case-by-case basis (not all mediums/techniques translate optimally to Zoom classes). Webcam classes are best used for professional practices courses, portfolio review sessions, and artist statement classes.

My first lesson that is offered for free isn't a synchronous lesson - it is a project that is part of my longer How to Be an Artist course, offered asynchronously online via Google Classroom. In this project, students make their own mark-making tools (both rigid pens and soft brushes) from found and purchased raw materials, and then use their handmade tools to make an India ink drawing.

You can view these individual lessons - over one hour of free video content - in this YouTube playlist: (concealed information) Enjoy!
