My name is Surayyah, and I am so excited to work with you! By May of 2021, I will have graduated with my Bachelors degree in Social Work and certification in Child Advocacy Studies from the University of Illinois. I have the most experience tutoring college-level students and adults but have tutored children, too.
As opposed to some academic tutors who like to go through a student's paper, correct it, and hand it back, I like to conversate with the student as we walk through their assignment to teach them the skills they need to write proficiently on their own. I believe going through an assignment and correcting it for them is detrimental to the student and their growth as a writer, whereas I believe working for the student is by working WITH them.
When I enter a session with a student, I always like to start by making them comfortable by welcoming them, asking how they're doing, and making small conversation. Not all work like this is exciting (trust me, I get it), so I like to connect with my student and make each session as interesting and fun as possible! Treating you as your own unique individual and customizing each session to benefit YOU as best as possible is one of my top priorities as a tutor.
I proceed to ask the student what they would like out of the session to ensure their needs are met, and if they have any questions before starting. Once we get an idea of what our focus is for the session we proceed accordingly (if for an assignment, we walk through the professor's assignment prompt to ensure we are addressing the student's work correctly). I never end a session until I confirm with my student that they are satisfied with the session and thanking them for their time.
Regarding creative writing, I specialize in imagery, word choice, proofreading, editing, storytelling/plot, grammar/punctuation, and more. :)
I am a soon-to-be college graduate who has been conducting writing tutoring sessions at my college for the past 4 years. I have received lots of positive feedback from instructors, students, and my fellow peer tutors regarding good grades, improved performance in class, and increased motivation.
My college writing career goes beyond academics. In 2018, I placed 2nd in my college's creative writing contest and published a children's book when I was a freshman in high school. I am currently working on several novels and short story compilations. I have also peer-reviewed my classmates' stories and helped my friend publish two books.

Surayyah is an amazing person. She is always so kind, patient, and understanding. She really does care about your goals and wants to help you reach them. I've had her as a tutor before, and she's super cool and fun to learn from! I definitely recommend you give her a shot. :)
I’ve known Surayyah since my freshman year of college. She has inspired me in so many ways in my ambitions as a writer. With her help and encouragement, I was able to write my very first novel! I credit the long hours of story development, scene writing, and edits to the help I received from her. She is one of the kindest and most patient people I know. She’s a wonderful tutor and I would recommend her to anyone!
