WORK EXPERIENCE

Description: I performed and optimized Diels-Alder cycloadditions to produce sp3-brominated photoinitiators for atom-trap radical polymerization (ATRP) reactions in an undergraduate research project. Different techniques, including Lewis acid catalysis and UV photodimerization, were employed to optimize the synthesis of the photoinitiators, whose reactivity was subsequently evaluated in ATRP reactions with styrene to produce polystyrene.

Descripción: The research I conducted for my Master’s Thesis focused on cobalt-catalyzed C(sp2)-H activation/functionalization reactions of benzylamine derivatives bearing a picolinoyl directing group. The first phase of my research involved optimization of Glaser-Hay homocoupling reactions to produce a library of 1,3-diynes bearing R-groups of different character. The second phase of my research focused on the characterization of the different products produced by the Co-catalyzed reactions via bidimensional NMR spectroscopy.

Descripción: Private tutoring classes in English, general chemistry, and organic chemistry to elementary school, high school, undergraduate, and medical students as well as adults. I use a variety of activities and exercises which are designed to maximize the student’s comprehension of the subject. I also design homework assignments so that the student continues to practice the material outside of the classes. If the student is preparing for an exam, I create practice exams and challenge problems and use them to teach problem solving strategies and time management.

I printed and hung up informational scientific posters in the chemistry department; these posters depicted different topics in chemistry that related to the season or to environmental issues. Additionally, I organized ACS Program-in-a-Box viewings that were offered to chemistry, biochemistry, and biology students as extra credit. I also moderated the meet-the-speaker sessions that enabled students to meet the scientists that visited the university to give talks.
