How to apply to art universities in the United States

Applying to universities that focus on the arts or have excellent arts programs can be a bit more tricky than applying to colleges to study a more "normal" field of study.

Probably the biggest difference is that while getting into a really top school for engineering or science is really much more about the grades you've received throughout high school and on your SAT, getting into a university's art program will also come down to your talent.

So if you are applying to an art program at a university or a school for arts specifically, what are some things you can do to really help your cause and almost assuredly get into the school of your choice?

Research the universities

When you are looking at universities that might be a fit for you, you should always do some research. Firstly researching what type of art is most known at the school will be really important.

If your goal is to become a sculptor, you can research if the university has good courses for sculpting.

The same goes for studying graphic design or a certain type of painting that you may be interested in.

You should also research how much the school costs, you may be really talented and lucky enough to get a scholarship, however, if you don't it will be a good idea to know which art universities are affordable.

Apply to multiple universities

That brings us to the next tip, make sure you apply to multiple universities. While you may have your heart set on one or two, you might not get into the ones you want or you might have a problem with how much it costs.

Your favorite schools might be great and you are willing to sacrifice to go to them for one reason or another, however you may not get in and you and/or your family may not be willing to pay the price.

Make sure to choose at the very least 5 schools. You will have the university you want to get into first, then have a few "safety schools" just in case.

Prepare a portfolio

As a potential art student in a university, you will have to prepare your application a bit differently. As mentioned earlier in this article, it won't be just about your overall GPA, your talent as an artist will also be looked at.

Something that will be very important for having a chance at admission to a top art school is having a really good portfolio.

Do your research, if the art school likes one type of art over another you may want to show them that type of art in your portfolio.

It is also a great idea to show them your best work in general when applying to an art program they, of course, want to see something special, you should show them what you are most proud of.

Get ready for interviews

This won't happen at every university you apply to. However, it is always good to go prepared. While being interviewed if that's the case, it can be a good opportunity for you to show what you are made of as well as show off the best works from your portfolio.

The best tip for this area is, to be honest, and confident.

None of us are 100% confident and we are all somewhat nervous during interviews. That is why it will be a good idea to prepare, so if a university wants an interview you will show that you are a bit more prepared than most of the other applicants.

Think about how to further your talents away from college

While art college is a great way to gain a lot of experience and naturally obtain a fine arts degree, it isn't the only way to become an artist.

While becoming an art teacher may require you to complete 4 years at university there are many artists who haven't completed a 4-year degree. So if you want to gain some talent and reviews, where can you look outside of a college campus?

Make connections

You can make some connections in the art community in your area. Meeting some professional artists can be a great way to learn and getaway into a job or two as well as a show of your portfolios.

If you are from a place where art isn't exactly a blossoming topic, you can try to head to a larger city like New York, Chicago, or Boston that will have a larger art community.

Learn art with a private tutor

Finding a private teacher in your area or even online is a great way of practicing your art. If you want to practice finding a teacher that can dedicate their time and point out some flaws they notice will help to take your art to another level.

If your idea is to get into an art school they can also help you improve your skills and even improve your portfolio to make your application look much better.

The best platform to find a private art tutor in your area or online will be with the platform Superprof. With Superprof you can use the platform to find a reputable art tutor in your area or have classes online.
