Science is for everyone!

A slogan presented with pride across the platforms of the Chicago Council on Science and Technology (C2ST).

Established in the year 2005, the council set upon a simple notion that can hardly be misconstrued: to enhance the publics' understanding and appreciation of science and technology whilst acknowledging the impact both have on our society in the past, present and future.

A committed team of science enthusiasts and a welcome donation from NASA has allowed the council to host over 430 scientific experts conducting various workshops and talks, 220+ programs specifically tailored toward tech and science, hosting over 22,000 people to such events with a 95% approval rate of those who have attended.

C2ST isn't the only organization that has sparked an interest within the sciences amongst Chicagoans.

In fact, each year there is a range of events, public seminars, and festivals dedicated to anything and everything upon the subject area.

Similar to other major cities such as New York, Boston & Houston, Chicago hosts its very own annual science festival, organized by an independent organization that aims to engage, educate & entertain the public about Science.

The mission statement reflects that of the STEM subjects that were introduced into the public educational system in 2001.

What does STEM stand for?

Well, if you are a parent or a student you will most likely know. For those who are unfamiliar, STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths.

It was introduced at the turn of the Millenia by scientific administrators at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

The scheme was introduced into structured education for each of the four areas aforementioned play a key role in both the growth and stability of the U.S. economy.

Millions of jobs across the country require candidates to possess skills reflective of the four STEM-based industries, and within each, company's ask for employees to be skilled in more than one of such areas i.e. computer engineers in today's market often carry higher level qualifications in both maths and technology.

The ISC (Illinois Science Council) offers various extra-curricular programs to further support students' learning of STEM.

Yet, it doesn't quite stop there.

To ensure that parents/guardians have a stronger understanding of such areas, they offer regular adult workshops so the older generation can get involved too.

Through the wide variety of programs we offer year-round, we showcase the scientists and research of the area’s institutions and companies that make Chicago our nation’s true City of Science.

This statement by the ISC reflects the attitude the city has toward science, and how it wishes to be regarded as the frontrunner in scientific innovation in the United States.

Due to the high concentration of students within the city, there is also a high concentration of job prospects for science graduates looking to work in the city upon completion of their studies.

Currently, there are over 594 available biology-related job vacancies within the Chicago area.

Due to the variance of extensive learning principles associated with the subject area, aspiring scientists have a wealth of alternative employment options to choose from.

Let's take a look at some of the current vacancies in more detail:

A Research & Development Biologist. An R&D Scientist's job responsibilities will largely reflect on the industry/sector the biologist chooses to work in.

A current vacancy located in Central Chicago states that the ideal candidate must have experience in a preclinical setting, with a fundamental understanding when it comes to conducting experiments with Spherical Nucleic Acid (SNA) in the mission to create therapeutic remedies.

Sounds complex, right? Well, the candidate's education/experiences also state that the individual must have obtained a Ph.D. whilst also have had 4+ years in a relevant occupational field.

As you can see, such an opportunity would be inapplicable for those recently out of education, as it requires a certain amount of vocational experience, and therefore graduates would stand much more of a chance at sealing a job within a junior or internship-level role.

An Associate Scientist: Cellular Researcher. This is a laboratory-based position that requires the future employee to perform collaborative experiments in molecular and cell biology.

The successful candidate will conduct various, cell-mediated genetic studies, including the analysis of genetic & pathway expressions, as well as the monitoring of protein levels in mammals for the development and understanding of cancer research.

An Aquatic Biologist. Are you someone who would feel claustrophobic in the confines of a laboratory-based vocation? Well, an aquatic biologist will present a prospective employee to work both in the lab and in-field in collecting and analyzing water samples.

Through biological analyses, researchers are expected to monitor environmental activity and to analyze possible causes and effects of water pollution.

A navigable stream that runs through the core of the city - the Chicago river flows 156 miles from Park City to Lockport and is filled with living organisms and aquatic life. The river requires specialists to conduct regular analyses to ensure the levels of pollution do not negatively affect the aquatic organism populations.

Also, as Chicago borders the great Lake Michigan, marine biologists are required to ensure North America's natural lakes are maintained.

Everything from the study of aquatic life to the observational analyses of the natural environment's required to ensure sustainability; such a job involves the individual to foresee a range of alternative factors.

A High School Teacher/Assistant Biology Professor. Teaching is known to be one of the most rewarding vocations, and having an interest in both science and education could make it the perfect job for you.

Each year, there are hundreds of openings for science graduates across the city to embark upon further education to become a qualified teacher.

Over the years, there has been a significant demand for high school science teachers and public education systems have incorporated various incentives to persuade graduates to train as qualified teachers.

In recent years, salaries have since become more competitive and various graduate schemes have meant that students don't have to incur further financial debts whilst gaining accreditation for acquiring qualified teacher status (QTS).
