Introduction to calculus

If you have to study calculus this upcoming semester, here is what you need to know.

The word calculus derives from a Latin word that originally meant "small pebble". This was the given name because mathematicians would use pebbles for teaching basic things like counting or measuring distances. Through the centuries, the word has evolved and today we usually use it to describe methods of computation.

The subject we are taught today in school was developed in Europe during the 17th-century by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (they didn't work on it together but they did publish around the same time). However, some elements of the field already appeared in ancient Greece, China, the Middle East, and India.

Calculus is the mathematical study of continuous change and this is a field in math that is divided into two branches, differential and integral calculus.

Differential calculus focuses on instantaneous rates of change and the slopes of curves. Integral calculus studies the accumulation of quantities and areas under or between curves.

You'll learn that differentiation and integration are inverse to each other and that is called The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. This theorem links the concept of differentiating a function (calculating the gradient) with the concept of integrating a function (calculating the area under the curve).

There are plenty of ways one could apply the formulas and principles of calculus. It is used in every branch of physics (physical science), computer science, engineering, statistics, medicine, business, economics, and more.

Will you be required to take calculus in college?

Calculus is probably one of the most important and used branches in mathematics, therefore, learning it is important, not only to get a good grade but overall for your education.

Having good math skills can be useful, even if you don't study anything in the sciences or math fields. Having a mathematical brain is great and it has many advantages.

For example, you can be in charge of your own finances, no one could ever scam you, you could help your friends out, you could take computer science classes and excel at it, and more.

If you're a high school student and you are wondering if you'll have to take calculus courses during your college or university years, continue reading to find out. Below is a list of degrees that have calculus in their curriculum:

  • All Engineering majors
  • All Business majors
  • Arts and Sciences:
  • Biology
  • Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Environmental Science (not Environmental Studies)
  • Mathematics
  • Neuroscience
  • Physics
  • Public Health

Below is a list of degrees that don't have calculus as a requirement:

  • Anthropology
  • Art and Art History
  • Classics
  • Communication
  • English
  • Environmental Studies
  • Ethnic Studies
  • History
  • Liberal Studies
  • Modern Languages
  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Religious Studies
  • Sociology
  • Theatre and Dance
  • Women and Gender Studies

Whichever degree you decide you pursue, you should always know what to expect from the years to come. So before you decide on a degree, you should check the curriculum and see what courses you'd have to take, how does the program work, what does the university has to offer, what else is offered in top schools, and more.

Collecting all this data is important because it will help you make a better decision and you'll get the opportunity to have a great college experience. If you choose blindly, you can end up changing from one university to another and lose time, money, and patience.

Find calculus tutors in Chicago

Looking for a mathematics tutor can be fun and overwhelming at the same time. You want to come up with a system that will allow you to narrow down your search and help you find the perfect tutor for you with great experience and great reviews.

The first step is always defining what it is you're looking for in a private tutor or teacher. Do you want your tutor to be fun and outgoing, or strict and tough, or a combination of both?

As a student, you know how you learn best, so you'll know what to look for in a private teacher. However, you should come up with a list of the things you expect from your teacher and your tutoring lessons.

You can ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you want to graduate with honors?
  • Are you looking to improve your high school grade?
  • Are you having a hard time learning and understanding calculus or mathematics in general?
  • Are you getting a degree in engineering but having a hard time with basic calculus concepts?
  • Do you need help revisiting basic algebra and geometry before you go into heavier topics in your calculus, physics, or chemistry class?
  • Are there any mathematical concepts that confuse you?
  • Do you want to prep for university courses?
  • Do you want help in general to improve your experience with education?
  • Do you need a tutor with great reviews?
  • Do you want to prep for an upcoming math test? Or any other type of important test?

Having an answer to these questions will help you figure out your goals and objectives with private tutoring. Once you find a tutor you can communicate these objectives to them and work together to achieve them.

Another thing you need to decide is if you want your classes to be online or in-person. If you choose online tutoring lessons you'll save time because you won't have to commute anywhere.

On the other hand, if you hold your lessons in person you'll be able to work faster and easier than you would if you were online. Working with tutors face-to-face has an advantage because your tutor will be able to see everything you are writing down and they'll be able to correct any mistakes right on the spot.

If you live in Chicago and you are looking for math tutors in the Chicago area you can go on Superprof and search according to your level and location. If you are outside of Chicago, in the suburbs, you can still look for tutors in Chicago and see if there is a tutor closer to you.

The profile of each tutor on Superprof contains all kinds of useful information for students. For instance, a profile has the rate per hour of the tutor, their CV and experience, an explanation of their teaching methodology, the levels they teach at, a profile picture, how many students they've had, and more.

There is one thing you won't find in the profile —but you can ask for it during the interview— which is reviews from previous students. Having reviews can help you make a decision depending on whether they're great, good, or bad.

Why is calculus important?

It's easy to believe that math is another useless subject we are obligated to learn because it is part of our education and there is nothing we can do about it. If you have this mindset, then you'll always have a hard time in math class.

However, if you change your mindset and start finding another sense to math class and calculus courses, you'll see how you improve in each test and grade. You could even graduate with honors only by changing your mindset on school and class.

Math is one of the coolest subjects because it helped explain many phenomena in nature and it also allowed us to create many useful artifacts we use in our daily lives. Calculus has been useful for small-scale and large-scale scientific inventions, discoveries, and advancements.

Depending on what calculus course and level you study (precalculus, calculus 1, or calculus 2) you'll get to understand the movement of sound and light, weather patterns, electronic circuits and systems, and the motion of astronomical bodies.

Keep in mind that this is not a subject that you can simply understand by going online and reading the introduction chapter of a math book. It is also not about getting a good grade in the class and then forgetting everything you learned once the semester is over.
