Studying in high school comes with a lot of pressure for a lot of different reasons. There is tons of pressure on students these days not only from all of the school coursework that they have to do but also with the future they have to think about, such as having to perform well in the classroom to get into the best colleges possible. Making friends and trying to fit in with the other students at school, as well as home life.
Students may be having problems at home that they do not discuss with their teachers at times. It is important to know as a student the best thing for you is to discuss any problems you may be having with someone that can help, whether it is academically or another problem.
There are people that work with students to help them with whatever problems they may be having. Of course, students that are in elementary school, middle school, and high school can be dealing with distinct issues. As the years go on for a normal student the pressure usually can be become larger, and issues between peers could start to become more frequent.
However there is good news, if you are a student that is struggling a bit in school there are plenty of options for you to improve your academic work. Sometimes it may seem like school is annoying and it doesn't matter but we all may struggle for one reason or another, maybe a certain subject is boring or difficult for you to grasp. However, finding a way to do the best you can in every subject will be important for you, especially when it comes time to apply for colleges. So why exactly do students struggle? Also, what can be done about it?
Things That Cause Students to Struggle

First of all, it is completely normal a student struggles at least with a subject or two. In college, especially at the beginning of studying during your first semester or two, you need to get used to the college way of studying, and failing a class or two is pretty normal. However, many students have other reasons that may give them problems when they are studying in middle or high school as well as college.
You can also be a really good student and try hard and still have a problem in a class or two. Sometimes it is easy for students or their parents to blame a teacher or a teacher to say a student simply doesn't try hard enough, but there could be plenty of other factors as well affecting a student's concentration.
Anxiety
We almost all get anxiety at some point in our lives, whether it be severe anxiety or something more moderate. Anxiety is the feeling of nervousness, worry, and/or fear. When you are studying it is easy to feel that way. Or even simply sitting in a classroom for long periods of time. Plenty of students, especially in their middle and high school years, may have some anxiety.
The thought of failing a test can plague a student's mind and really affect their concentration. There are other reasons to feel anxious at school, maybe you have a crush on someone or a problem within your circle of friends, and thinking about those types of things can cause you to become distracted, or because of something that is bothering you at home.
Anxiety can be a cause of becoming distracted with your school work and it is also something that you shouldn't ignore no matter how moderate your anxiety is.
Problems With Other Students
During school, we often meet some of our best friends. Perhaps some friends of yours are and will be the best friends you'll have for the rest of your life. However, if you have been to high school problems exist between students. Unfortunately, bullying is a problem that exists, especially during middle school and high school.
Verbal and physical bullying exists and should be handled right away. It can make studying difficult for a student if they are thinking about avoiding a certain student or seeing a student they know is going to cause the problem. While it may seem uncool to do, the best way to deal with the problem is to go talk to a teacher or guidance counselor.
Busy Schedule
Whether we are in high school, middle school, or studying in college we can have a lot on our plates. Life isn't just about going to school. Most of us want to be well-rounded individuals and want and even need to do some extracurricular activities. Many students and young people love sports, many love to be in clubs or play an instrument.
For those students that are in high school, extracurricular activities can not only be because you want to increase your chances of getting into a college, you choose some clubs or sports because you like doing them. So sometimes it may seem like an easy choice to skip studying for a test or doing homework if you've got football practice to go to or a trip for a school club.
However, as much as you may enjoy these things and they may seem like a priority of homework and studying it can't replace the time you use to study and do homework and projects. As a student ignoring your homework and study time will lead to struggles in the classroom.
If you are in college, it is also typical for students to have to work part-time. Colleges and universities unfortunately are pretty expensive and sometimes students work through college to pay off their tuition. While it is great to start paying your tuition or student loans, it won't make any sense to be paying for the school if you can't pass your classes. Finding a balance between work and school work will be important.
