History Of Chess

Chess has been in existence for almost 1500 years. The game's earliest version most likely evolved in India before the sixth century AD, and then it spread from there to Persia.

The Muslim world adopted chess after the Arabs conquered Persia, and it later expanded to Southern Europe. Chess evolved into its current version in Europe about the 15th century.

Modern chess tournaments began in the second part of the nineteenth century, with the first World Chess Championship happening in 1886.

The twentieth century witnessed significant advances in chess theory and the formation of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

The use of computers for analysis, which began in the 1970s with the first programmed chess games on the market, is a 21st-century development.

Moreover, online gaming first became popular in the mid-1990s.

How To Play Chess?

Chess is a tabletop game that has stood the test of time—perhaps the most well-known.

It has been played around for centuries, but it is still enormously popular today. For example, the popularity of chess can be gauged by movies like Queen of Katwe and the popular Netflix series Queen's Gambit.

Several people have been playing chess since childhood. However, if you are new to this game, the following are easy steps to learn chess quickly.

But, remember, you can master the art of playing chess by practicing day and night.

Setup

Two people play the chess match on an 8x8 chessboard. The chessboard consists of 64 squares, alternating between white and black.

White squares must be on the right-hand side of each player when correctly set up. Each player's pieces are placed in two parallel rows (also called ranks) nearest to them.

For example, from the player's point of view, the second line comprises eight pawns, each positioned on a separate square.

The closest rank is balanced, with castles (formally called rooks) put on the left and right-hand corner squares, knights standing in the inner space, and bishop on the outside area on either side.

The queen and king occupy the rank's two center squares. The player sets the queen on the square of her color (e.g., the white queen on a white square). The king is placed on the opposite color.

This implies that both queen and king should be facing their opponent's queen and king, resulting in a symmetrical board setup.

White makes the opening move; afterward, every player makes alternate single turns till one is defeated by checkmate or quit.

Furthermore, a draw is also an option.  Moreover, a timer is used in tournaments, and the first one to exceed the time limit loses the game.

Movement Of Chess Pieces

There are six main components of chess, including rook (castle), knight, pawn, queen, king, and bishop. Every piece moves differently. Let's find out!

Knight

Knights are the more special chess pieces as they can move through others by jumping over them. It simply can capture them by landing on a vacant space. However, it cannot go to a piece of the same color.

The movement of knights is in an "L" pattern. For example, backward, two squares ahead, right or left, one square vertically or horizontally, or vice versa.

Rook

The rook, also known as the castle, should only be moved horizontally within its current column and row.

Moreover, it cannot go past the same color's pieces, but it may grab the opposite shade pieces chess by traveling to the occupied spot. Also, a player cannot move it diagonally.

Queen

The queen has the option of moving however many squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. However, she is limited to moving in a straight line.

Moreover, the queen cannot pass through pieces of similar colors and must capture a chess piece of a contrasting color by going into its tile.

Bishop

Bishops can travel however many squares diagonally, which implies that they always go sideways down the squares that match the current color of its tile.

As a result, each player starts the game with two bishops who move along two different colored tiles.

Bishops cannot travel vertically or horizontally. Therefore, it cannot move past pieces with their corresponding color and instead grabs a piece belonging to the opponent by moving to its tile.

King

It may only move one space diagonally, vertically, or horizontally. In addition, this piece cannot advance into a location that would give the opposing player a checkmate or check.

Unlike every chess piece, one can't capture the king - a player gets defeated after the king moves into checkmate, resulting in an inescapable seizure on the opponent's following turn.

Chess Rules

Each player in chess takes individual turns by making a single move. Thus, players cannot skip a turn; instead, they must make a move. Moreover, every piece moves distinctly and cannot move in any other way.

Pieces cannot pass through pieces of either color without stopping or gripping them except for the knight.

How To Capture Pieces

If a piece collides with an opponent's, it is captured and taken off the board. Moreover, one can't place parts of the same color on a square of the same color.

When a piece captures an opponent's, it must complete its existing move's action, and the player's turn comes to an end.
