Do you ever feel like your life could be so much better if you could only afford a gym membership?

Well, we are here to tell you that's not true because there are plenty of cheap and free opportunities to start working out from home or the park close to your house.

During the pandemic, even Olympic athletes had to figure out a way of practicing their sport from home. People who wanted to maintain their healthy lifestyle or start one also figured out a way of squishing in daily workouts during confinement. It doesn't matter if you can't afford a gym membership or you can't buy expensive gym equipment.

The important part of exercising is moving your body and having daily activities to avoid all the health issues that present with sedentarism. Physical activity is very important for our mental health too because it helps us keep our minds sharp. There are many other benefits like having high levels of energy and getting the perks of having big, strong muscles.

According to experts, humans should work out at least three times per week with some sort of intense workout and then move around and stay active every day of the week.

Skipping physical activity for years can cause many health issues like heart disease, weight gain, muscle atrophy, low levels of energy, physiological problems, and more.

Nevertheless, we are here to give you tips and ideas of ways you could exercise for free or cheaper than paying for a gym membership. Remember that many things depend on your workout of preference.

For instance, if you want to do yoga you will need a yoga mat, if you want to do cardio, you will need a place to go running, if you want to build strength you will need weights, or if you want guided classes you will need a computer or a phone, and so on.

Workout with a friend

We all know how easy it is to stay in bed watching Netflix and eating junk food during a free day or during our free time. This happens mainly because we are not motivated or pushed to introduce physical activity into our lives.

That's why it is recommended when you're trying to build a habit, to do it with someone else. If you decide to start working out daily then you can decide to do it with a sibling, partner, or friend.

If you work out with a friend then you'll push each other to get out of bed and start exercising. There are plenty of sports and activities you can do with a friend.

You can go running or walking, find workout videos, subscribe to a program, or do any other type of training or workouts together. The best part of working out with someone is that you can split the cost.

You can hire a personal trainer and ask if more than one person can join the class, you could pay for an app or a program and still split the cost.

With a friend, you get a chance to lower the costs and the benefits of working out with other people. This way you can work towards your health goals and a healthy lifestyle without harming your wallet.

Find a coach on Superprof

If you're at a beginner level and you are seeking a cheap option to exercise, Superprof can be a great alternative. You can look for coaches or personal trainers and look for someone whose fees fit your budget.

Once you define what kind of workouts you're interested in (running, strength building, yoga, full-body workouts, intensity workouts, aerobic, workout tips, etc) you can start looking at profiles on our site.

You should also define whether you'd like in-person classes or online lessons. If you want in person, then the location will be another important factor. Take a few minutes to browse around the website before you decide on one coach.

Try to set up a meeting to interview all the candidates you like and keep in mind that some tutors offer the first class for free, so make sure you take advantage of that opportunity.

On Superprof there are coaches for all kinds of levels, so remember to look for someone prepared to teach someone at your level and with your physical capacities.

Some coaches you like might be in high demand but don't get frustrated, you will find the perfect person to help you out with your fitness goals and workouts in no time.

Use social media

If you want to exercise from home or get some physical activity with guidance but without having to pay a monthly gym membership, then your best option is to turn to social media for help.

Today, social media (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, etc) is an endless resource of all sorts of content. If you're looking for entertainment, learn a new skill, join a book club, do activism, stumble upon online classes, or work out, you can go on a social media platform and find an entire community of people doing just what you're looking for.

There are many fitness coaches uploading content at least once per day, many communities, groups, and more. There are people teaching yoga, CrossFit, weight lifting, pilates, aerobic workouts, training for different sports, or people teaching you about healthy habits, how to avoid disease linked to a sedentary life (heart disease, overweight, blood pressure disease, etc) and more.

Using videos to work out is another option. You can find someone on YouTube and follow their exercises or save Instagram workout videos and use them every day while you work out.

Social media can be an incredible resource and on Using social media to exercise we tell you how.

Training and physical health are about consistency so don't think that by saving videos and working out every other day you will see your body and health change. You don't need intensity or to workout for 2 hours one day and then not at all the rest of the week. Go slow, but steady!

Take advantage of school facilities

If you're a student, whether that is a college or high school student, you should take advantage of your school's campus. Due to the pandemic, many schools are closed and if yours is, then there's nothing you can do about it. But, if your school is open you should definitely take advantage of the football, basket, or baseball fields on campus.

You can go out and practice a sport with friends or use the space for training, doing your exercises, running, walking, and moving around. Many colleges have a lot of green areas which you could use for training, to do your aerobic routine or any type of outdoor activity.

Adults tend to get wrapped up in the nuances of work and responsibilities and forget the importance of exercise, but if you start to build a habit while you're young then you'll keep the healthy habit as a grown-up. That's why you must take advantage of the space your campus has to offer.

Liberal arts schools have mandatory sports credits, which means that you will eventually have to take a class. If that's the case, make sure you make the most of it, show up every week, keep up with the exercises and the training, and get an A!

Fitness is not about owning expensive equipment or attending an expensive gym, it's about caring for your body and strength. So make the best of the things you do have and take care of your health.

If you're no longer a student don't worry, there's plenty of options out there too. Here is a guide to The top free apps for exercising. Using an app to exercise can have many benefits but the best part is that all your progress will be recorded in the app and you can easily see how much you've improved.

There are many activities you can do for free, so stop slacking around, start doing some sort of physical activity and enjoy the benefits of the fitness lifestyle.
