Deriving from the Latin word 'Scientia', translating as 'knowledge'; science has been a fundamental enterprise that has been around for thousands of years.

In a very loose definition, it is to acquire an understanding of the objects and events we encounter as a species - thus increasing our knowledge of the world and universe around us.

Biology is one of the three main categories within the subject that deals with living organisms and their vital processes.

As a core program within the United States, those that were born and bred in the City of Angels and have gone through some form of public education would have experienced various learning principles associated with the subject.

The National Science Education Standards was created in 1996 and is responsible for guiding public schools from ages K-12 in terms of curriculum coverage.

If you have already completed your high school education, some of these subject areas may jot your memory:

  • Cell research and homeostasis
  • Evolution, diversity & classification
  • Ecology
  • Genetics
  • Nucleic acid & protein synthesis

Ring any bells?

Well, out of all the core subjects, biology is known to be one of the most complex, and students can find its diverse range of topic areas overwhelming due to the sheer volume of learning principles.

An age-old practice to help counteract such issues is by hiring personal tutors to support students in conjunction with their schooling.

A specialist tutor will allow the opportunity for students to consolidate knowledge they may be unsure about, as well as identifying and correcting any learning discrepancies that may be present.

The main difference concerning one-to-one tutoring and class-based learning is that an individual in a classroom/group setting may get confused within particular learning areas and this may, unfortunately, result in important pieces of knowledge remaining unaccounted for.

In turn, this can affect the quality of one's work, and it may also harm a student's exam results.

Tutors are not alone beneficial for those still in structured education, but they can support students of all ages and levels of ability.

There are a plethora of reasons as to why an individual would reach out for the assistance of a specialist science tutor, and similarly to other city's across the states, whether that be New York, Chicago or Houston, this increasingly popular approach to learning is becoming more commonplace in the field of education.

Studying Biology: What You'd Expect to Learn

A biology textbook

Most academics that opt to study Biology as a major usually proceed to further education, partaking in a postgraduate and even doctorate qualification.

A major allows the student to establish which particular area is of most interest so they can then pave their interests toward a unique area of work.

There are a number of colleges and universities across Los Angeles that offer biology as a major, undergraduate four-year program, and the modules you will be expected to cover include, but are not limited too:

General Biology: often constituting to the highest volume of applications within the area, a generalized approach in which a range of modules from biomedical science, microbiology, and environmental biotechnology will be studied.

Biochemistry, Biophysics & Molecular Biology: interested in studying the building blocks of life? Students will learn everything from cells to living organisms, chemical compounds, and reactions.

Cell Biology & Anatomical Sciences: this is a program that focuses on the study of the structure, regulation, and function of cells.

Microbiological Sciences & Immunology: this deals with the genetics of microorganisms and the biology of infectious diseases.

Genetics: nature or nurture? Students will analyze how living things receive common traits within previous generations.

There are 20+ separate major collegiate and university programs across the United States which offer biology-related four-year programs, it's up to the student involved to apply for the programs that are most suitable to their interests.

College/University Biology Programs in Los Angeles

With over 651 students graduating last year from the Biology major at The University of California-Irvine, the school's breadth of facilities and substantial staff base receives a high number of applicants each year.

Also, The University of California-Los Angeles offers the highest number of Biology-related majors in the city.

They also offer online master's science-based programs so if you have work/family-related commitments and the duty of traveling to and from lessons is unrealistic, you have the opportunity to conduct your studies at home through the university's online portal.

The University of Southern California offers 4 biology majors, 3 masters, and 5 doctoral degrees in relation to biology.

With graduate programs spanning from oceanic sciences, computational biology, and biological oceanography, the sky is the limit for those looking to gain a stronger academic understanding of specific areas of the subject. Furthermore, the faculty constitutes of members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.

Analyzing the Job Prospects

Although biology may be a strong interest, it is important to understand what occupational opportunities are available upon graduation.

Studying biology can open the door to an abundance of career prospects.

So, what is the job market currently offering?

Similar to bustling city's such as Boston and Philadelphia, there are a wealth of job opportunities currently available across the City of Angels.

Firstly, your academic background and vocational experience play a key role in determining how applicable your credentials are to such job prospects.

A job vacancy that is currently in high demand within the Los Angeles area is for graduates to work as a laboratory assistant, otherwise known as a biological technician.

In this area, you will be expected to employ various techniques and skills within a laboratory setting that will yield accurate and reliable results. Much of these skills will have already been learned within a student's major, and the individual should also be responsible for working collaboratively with fellow researchers.

Through the documentation of results, the individual must also be able to articulate their findings to colleagues, whilst using their learned knowledge to form conclusions whilst using analytical skills to form a judgment.

Balance Careers recently recorded the average wage to be at $45,860 per annum for new to career biological technicians.

Usually requiring a candidate to possess at least a relevant postgraduate certificate, a biochemist plays a key role in biotech/biomedical research to create and improve a range of products.

A particular knowledge of anatomy and physiology would place a candidate in an advantageous position and on average, a biochemist will be earning on average $94,490 per annum.

Note to consider:

As a biochemist, you will mainly be working in a laboratory, similar to that of a biological technician.

The average salary is higher for a biochemist as candidates are expected to have continued their education after their major so they are more academically aligned with the tasks at hand.

The Benefits of a Specialist Biology Tutor

A specialist tutor can prepare students for upcoming examinations and practical-based laboratory assessments.

To gain insight into one who has 'been there and done that' will provide the student with invaluable advice on how best to conduct themselves in such situations.

Biology-related educational programs aren't known to be easy, in fact, quite the opposite.

Therefore, a trained eye who has been in a similar situation will be able to educate and prepare the student following whatever area it is they are looking to improve.

Further benefits include:

  1. Allows for individual and unique feedback opportunities
  2. Encourages more involvement and discussion between student and tutor
  3. Maintains and improves self-esteem and confidence levels when a student is partaking in practical-based assessments
  4. Generates opportunities for regular assessment, thus identifying and addressing areas of weakness.
