The History of Los Angeles

Like with other large cities across the USA such as Houston or Chicago, Los Angeles is steeped in history. The city originated in the year 1781 and in the beginning, it was home to two Native American tribes known as Chumash and Tongva. You can find out lots of information about them in the natural history museum. As more immigrants came to settle, the cities name was changed to “Our Lady the Queen of the Angels” which was in honor of the Virgin Mary.

There were only a few families living there back in the 17th Century. Over time, the cities name was shortened to Our Lady of the Angels until it eventually became known as Los Angeles.

In the year 1847, the US military occupied Los Angeles. In the 19th Century after the discovery of gold and oil in California, more people settled into the growing city. With the mild climate, lush beaches like Los Angeles long beach and the Santa Monica mountains as a backdrop, the city was poised to grow explosively.

Fast forward to the 20th Century and Los Angeles is now the second largest city in the US and home to some of the most famous film studios in the world like Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures.

The University of Southern California has a major department offering history courses in Los Angeles. It is categorized based on undergraduates, graduates, Ph.D. students. The history tutors are famous historians and scholars with great research in world history.

Loyola Marymount University

Loyola Marymount University was founded in the year 1911 as a college. It is situated in the metropolitan area at the heart of Los Angeles and is one of the major Catholic universities in the US.

The campus is placed on a 150-acres over the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful location close to a national forest. It is a private research university followed by Jesuit and Marymount traditions. Its aim was to provide diverse academic education and create a better world.
