If you are still a student in high school you may still be a bit a ways away from seeing the benefits of a degree in the field of chemistry.

There are some really great reasons to study chemistry if you see yourself studying in a new place, discovering something new, and in the future a chance to earn a good salary when you're working

  • Achieving skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
  • Research projects available in Chemistry and Biochemistry that you can find across the globe
  • The chance to become a PhD
  • Finding a career that pays well

Opportunities like this are fantastic. If you sometimes dream about working and researching in a lab in Europe or another part of the world, studying chemistry can be your ticket to do just that. Chemistry also opens the door to great careers such as:

  • Chemical Engineer
  • Forensic Scientist

While Los Angeles has some amazing beaches and we would just love to be surfing and living it up at the beach all summer, those who want to get ahead in Chemistry should try and keep studying. Luckily in Los Angeles, there are opportunities for you to keep studying and working on your chemistry skills during the summer months so you don't get rusty.

Programs and colleges often have summer chemistry programs to make sure you keep yourself motivated and interested in chemistry and prepare yourself for the hard work of college-level chemistry classes and research.

Some programs and colleges/universities that offer chemistry programs in the summer months are:

The UCLA summer sessions are for college and university students to keep practicing and learning, however, they aren't only for UCLA students, but for any college/ university student interested in studying during the summer months.

At Los Angeles Valley College the aim is to help prepare students who are going to study biology or chemistry as a major in college.

The Teenlife and California Science Center programs are geared more towards younger students who are interested in science and chemistry. If you are a high school student a program like Teenlife can be perfect for you. If you are a parent the California Science Center will keep your child interested all summer in studying science and chemistry.

Taking Advanced Chemistry Courses in High School in LA

If you are interested in chemistry and have already passed biology class early on in your high school years, as well as algebra, and geometry, as well as having passed these classes with high grades you can think about taking Honors Chemistry.  Honors Chemistry is like the normal chemistry class you would take during tenth grade in terms of material and what you will learn.

However, Honors Chemistry is made to be much more difficult and challenging for students that are ready for the challenge and want Honors Chemistry on their high school resume. Taking Honors Chemistry is a great opportunity to learn to be more organized with their studies as well as make their resume look better for colleges.

After Honors Chemistry you can then think about taking AP Chemistry. AP Chemistry is another advanced chemistry course however it is not just difficult it is designed to be the same as difficult as a college-level chemistry course. Studying AP Chemistry can be extremely difficult however worth it if the chemistry is what you want to study in college as you will have the possibility of earning 3 college credits at the end of the course.

So if you're from LA and want to stay (I don't blame you) or you want to head to Hollywood to study what universities have chemistry programs?

UCLA

UCLA which is world-famous for its basketball program is also renowned for its educational program as well. The UCLA campus which sits in Westwood, Los Angeles offers students undergraduate studies in chemistry and biochemistry.

After studying for an undergraduate degree in one of these two fields it is also possible to then study a master's degree in chemistry or biochemistry at UCLA. Beyond that, you would have the ability to then study for a doctorate at UCLA in the fields of chemistry or biochemistry.

USC

The University of Southern California is another famous institution in the heart of Los Angeles. USC offers a few different chemistry programs that would look good on any future resume. The USC Department of Chemistry offers the programs of study of Chemical Biology, Chemical Research, Biochemistry, and Chemistry.

Caltech

Caltech has a wonderful department of chemistry. Caltech which is in Pasadena, California offers students even more alternative programs of study regarding chemistry. Caltech offers two different undergraduate programs in the field of chemistry which are, chemistry and chemical engineering.

The graduate program at Caltech also offers chemistry, chemical engineering, as well as a biochemistry program. Caltech will offer students both graduate and undergraduate access to a world-class research facility.

Which university is right for you??

All that depends on what you would like to study in the future.
