Some people like to paint, others like dancing, but if computers are your thing, we are here to tell you how and where you can learn to code online.
But first, make sure you check out our Guide to Coding and find a quick summary of everything you need to know before you start learning how to code.
Keep in mind that there are many programming classes, courses, and tutorials. You can pay for a course or even a coding academy, but if you are good at teaching yourself things, then learning how to code online is not a bad idea!
Many resources are free but if you want or need a certificate stating you passed a course or took programming classes, then it probably won't be free.
But rest assured, in today's tech world, there are many free resources available to help students learn skills that many schools aren't teaching or help people who can't afford to go to a 4-year program in any school.
What is coding?
Let's start with the basics. Coding is a set of instructions that tells a computer, website, app, platform, or program what to do. A programmer or developer can build software by creating a set of codes or rules in a language that computers and the web "understand" (below we'll explain why this word is in quotation).
To see a code you can right-click on your browser window and choose the “view page source” option. A new window will pop up and you will see the code of the website you're in. That code is the language that tells the computer how to make a web page look as it does.
You probably won't understand much of it (unless you're a computer science major). But that's ok because you're about to start learning how to code!
Remember earlier where the word "understand" was in quotations? Many people explain codes as a language that a computer understands because it's the best way to get started with the definition.
A computer "speaks" in binary code, a mathematical language of ones and zeros. Imagine 2 engineers that have to build a bridge. There's one on each side and the only way they can communicate is with a flashlight and "on" means yes and "off" means no. This is exactly how computer language works!
