The basics of calculus

In simple words, calculus is the study of continuous change. This means that it studies rates of change of functions and accumulation of infinitesimally small quantities.

If you ever have to take calculus you'll learn that it is divided into two main branches, differential and integral calculus. Differential calculus is focused on rates of change of quantities and slopes of curves or surfaces. On the other hand, integral calculus involves summing infinitesimally small quantities.

If you ever take a calculus class in school or university, you'll learn about the limits of a function, how the derivative of a function is derived, the rules of differentiation, what the derivative of a function means, how to work out derivatives from first principles, 2nd and higher-order derivatives, applications of differential calculus, and more.

If all of that sounded intimidating, don't worry! You won't have to learn it all in one course. This subject is divided into three main courses, precalculus, calculus 1, and calculus 2.

In a precalculus course, you'll learn other subjects that'll prepare you to face calculus. Your teacher will teach you trigonometry and algebra, two basic subjects necessary for the understanding of calculus.

The curriculum of a precalculus class usually includes learning about certain mathematical concepts like quantitative reasoning and functions. The units covered in precalculus usually are functions, inverse functions, complex numbers, and rational functions.

Once you pass precalculus, you'll have to take calculus 1. This course is mainly about differential calculus and the related concepts. The units covered during a semester usually are limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, and integrals.

Last, but not least, you'll have to take calculus 2 after you pass calculus 1. Calculus 2 is usually a segue-way for more complex courses in engineering, physics, and other science majors. It is an extension of the previous course and some of the units covered are differential equations, sequence and series, application of integrals, and trapezoidal rule.

Keep in mind that there are some subjects and concepts that won't be explicitly useful for your class but it doesn't hurt to know more about statistics, geometry, and other math concepts in the middle.

Learning calculus with a tutor

Working with a private tutor can be incredibly beneficial for your academic life.

The job of a tutor is to provide guidance and support to their students in all the topics or subjects they need help with. Tutors usually pay attention to the topics reviewed in school and reinforce them during their lessons.

The one-on-one modality of private tutoring makes the lessons much easier for students because they get an opportunity to ask and have answers to all of their questions.

In a normal course, there are 20 other students in the classroom and the teacher has to pay attention to everyone. This task is an admirable one, however, many times, some students don't receive the attention they need.

Some students work much faster than their classmates and they are left feeling unchallenged in class. Other students have a hard time keeping up with the group and they end up giving up.

If these students had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a tutor, they could go at their own pace and stop feeling bored or pressured and instead feel challenged and valued.

A tutor will make their student feel seen, they will challenge them, correct their mistakes, help them work through their obstacles, give them useful study tips, and much more.

If you choose to get tutoring lessons for your calculus course, you should define which topics you would like to review with the tutor. This way you can ask even before hiring them if they have experience teaching those topics.

Find calculus lessons in Houston

If you are a math student looking for tutoring sessions in Houston, Texas, there are plenty of resources you could use. If you go online you can find a lot of tutoring services and tutors in the Houston area or the state of Texas.

If you have a math tutor, they can help you understand and perfect your math skills in topics like statistics, algebra, linear equations, geometry, calculus, and much more. All you have to do is find a tutor with enough experience teaching students at your level.

To find tutors who have experience teaching a student like yourself (whether you are in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, or university) you must define some crucial factors.

For instance, do you want the classes to be held online or in-person? Do you want to study for a specific math exam (linear equations, algebra, calculus, geometry, mathematics, statistics) or do you wish to improve your math skills overall?

You need to define what are your goals and objectives before you start searching for tutors. This way, once you start searching, you'll know exactly what and who to look for.

If you go searching for tutors on Superprof you'll see that the profile of all of the tutors has crucial information. For instance, you'll see their level and years of experience in education, their teaching methodologies, their CV, the subjects and topics they teach,  and more.

Reading reviews is not only important when it comes to choosing a restaurant. Reviews can be useful in many other situations too. Keep in mind that you can always ask the tutors you'll interview if they can give you reviews or references from previous students. This way you can talk to someone who knows what kind of teacher they are.

Remember that a tutor is a person that you'll have to spend many hours with. That's why you need to find someone that you like, or else those hours can become unbearable and you might end up quitting.

And don't forget that tutoring is a job and a business, so you have to think of it as an investment in your education and academic life. Find more information about calculus lessons in Los Angeles.

Why learning calculus is useful

Calculus is one of the most popular and used branches in mathematics. It can be applied to countless different fields like physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, economy, business, and much more.

This subject is usually a prerequisite for many college courses, but don't worry, you can still take a calculus course during your college years.

For example, if you're getting a degree in engineering, before getting into the core courses of engineering you have calculus as a prerequisite for those courses. You need to get college credit for pre-calculus, calculus 1, and 2.

In calculus classes, students have an opportunity to understand weather patterns, the movement of sound and light, electronic circuits and systems, and the motion of astronomical bodies.

If you go into business, you can use calculus to calculate the rate at which your business is growing and use the information to make changes in your sales strategies or continue going the same way.

As a student in university, you probably have a different view of math than when you were a student in high school because as you grow up you start understanding the importance of certain subjects.

Keep in mind that calculus is not a subject you can learn by simply going online and reading about it. You can go online and find resources and tools to help you, but you must have a teacher, a course, and hours of hard work practicing to dominate this subject.
