If someday it is your idea to work as a teacher or tutor there are different qualifications you may or may not need to be able to work in this role. Teaching is one of the most underappreciated jobs around and while it may not be paid like a lawyer or doctor, if you want to be a teacher you're gonna have to go through a lot of preparation, studying, and taking exams to be a teacher in a school.

Of course, if it is you really have your mindset on becoming a teacher then there is no better profession, even if you aren't paid in six figures, you will get out what you put into it, and your relationships with your students will fulfill you. So how do you get to that point?

A lot of studying, completing degrees, and taking exams of course, and having a lot of experience as well.

Let's say you are not ready to become a full-fledged teacher just yet, or you don't see yourself becoming a full-time teacher in a school. There are always other options available to you, and if you think you have enough experience or knowledge, in this case in music, you can do it without having any real qualifications or titles.

If you want to be a music teacher in a school you will need qualifications, if you just would like to open up your own tutoring service there is much less to do. However, in both cases, you definitely need two things, talent, and experience with music and musical instruments.

So how and where can you get qualifications to become a music teacher in the United States? Is it easy? What other tips and advice can help you along the way?

Do You Want to Be a Teacher or Tutor?

An important question you may be asking yourself is if you really want to be a full-time music teacher for the next 20 to 25 years of your life. For some of you, you be okay with that thought, for others it may be a dream of yours to teach children and teenagers in school, and for others, it may not be something you want to do for the long term.

After all in many people's opinion if you don't love teaching you're going to hate it, so you should be around 100 percent convinced to want to be a teacher.

So do you want to be a music teacher? What are some of the positives of becoming a full-time music teacher?

  • Stable salary, job and lifestyle
  • Respected profession
  • Work with students

The most positive thing about becoming a school music teacher is the fact that is a stable job. If you have a job for the school course or if you are hired long-term then you have a stable salary and work coming to you all year. There are also paid vacations and summers off, which is a pretty huge bonus if you ask anyone.

Being a music teacher is of course a respected profession as many people respect secondary and elementary school teachers as a job, and if teaching is truly one of your callings then working with students will be a big positive for you. You will have the satisfaction of helping students mold their future and work with them on a day-to-day basis as well as getting to know their parents and siblings.

Negatives of Becoming a Music Teacher

Becoming a teacher may seem like a no-brainer to people who want paid vacations and summers off.

However, it isn't worth it if the prospect of working with students and preparing lessons doesn't excite you. Teaching in a school can be a very stressful job at times, even for those who are completely motivated and love teaching. So imagine if your head isn't 100 percent into teaching, it is not recommended at all.

  • The Work comes home with you
  • You have to deal with parents
  • You must deal with student's personal problems
  • You may have many students in a class

The negatives of becoming a teacher can be obvious for those who don't really want to work with 20 or 30 students in the classroom, and don't have the motivation to put in the extra work of grading tests and homework when they could be at home just relaxing.

If you want to be a teacher, music or otherwise it is a fantastic profession, if you aren't really motivated to be a full-time teacher and just want summers off, then not so much.

Qualifications Needed to Become a Music Teacher

So if after reading all that, you still want to be a teacher, you should know that there is quite a lot you have to do before you can become a music teacher. If you want to work in a school, the same as any type of teacher, whether they be a math teacher or science teacher, and of course music teacher, you need to do complete at least two or three important qualifications.

  • BA in Music
  • Master in Teaching
  • Pass the Teacher Certification exam

If you would like to be a music teacher you're going to need to pass all of these steps to be able to work in a school as a music teacher.

A bachelor's degree in music will give you the experience and the education to become a music teacher and be able to teach students music and how to play instruments in the future.

Of course you also have to learn how to teach. One of the other qualifications will be to complete a master's that instructs you how to teach and then by the end of that take an exam that proves you can teach in a school classroom.

Positives and Negatives of Becoming a Music Tutor

Tutoring is a profession that is quite different from teaching but has some strong similarities. Yes as a tutor you will be teaching students, whether you are teaching adults or children/teenagers will depend entirely on you. So what are the positives and negatives of becoming a music tutor?

There are plenty of cool reasons to become a music tutor. The best word you can associate with tutoring music is freedom. You will have the freedom to choose when to give classes, which ages of students you want, what type of instruments or music you want to teach, and you can be mostly in charge of the business if not totally in charge.

  • Freedom to choose the age level of students
  • Freedom to choose the genre of music you'd like to teach
  • Freedom to choose what instruments you want to teach your students how to play
  • You can work where you want

All of these are real positives of becoming a music tutor. If you love music but don't have the qualifications to become a classroom teacher or if you don't want to be a full-time teacher this is a great chance to work teaching music and getting some money for doing so.

On the downside, you won't have the stability that a classroom music teacher does when they are working in a school. You may not find enough students and you won't have paid vacations as you will be working for yourself, however if you can find enough work by marketing yourself well, you can make enough money to become a full-time tutor or at least a part-time tutor.

Working as a tutor you can make some extra money on the side, whether while you are working another job or studying tutoring can be a good way to make you money.
