What is advertising?

Advertising is a way of communication for marketing that openly sponsors a message to promote or sell a product or service. In other words, an advertisement is a message that incites a buyer to purchase a product.

The actual presentation of the message in a medium is referred to as an advertisement: advert or ad for short.

Advertising works directly with sponsors, which are channels used to promote the services or products any business wishes to sell.

Many people tend to confuse advertising with public relations, however, the difference is that an advertiser pays to have control over the message they are communicating. Whereas in public relations you really don't have control over the message.

Others tend to confuse it with personal selling but it's different because in advertising the message is non-personal. For instance, personal selling sells a product directing a message to one individual, an advertisement directs the message to hundreds and thousands of people.

There are many mediums of communication through which you can publish an advertisement. For example, the mass media, newspapers, magazines, television, radio, direct mail, or banners.

Other outlets used in our modern era are Google, Facebook, Instagram, virtual marketplaces, blogs, websites, messages, and much more. The amount of options you have is limitless.

The goal of a commercial ad is to generate or increase the sales of the products or services the company offers. And the way to do that is by working on the "brand" of the business.

Developing a brand can be complicated but it is essential for advertising to work. For example, Coca-Cola has developed its brand as a drink that brings happiness and Nike has developed its brand as the sportswear for daredevils.

On the other hand, a direct-response ad is trying to generate an immediate sale. These ads are usually when a company tells you their product or service is on sale or if they give you some sort of deal with a purchase.

Finally, there are also non-commercial entities that aren't advertising for a product but they advertise for political parties, interest groups, religious organizations, and governmental agencies.

Knowing the types of advertisement will help you decide exactly how and where you wish to promote your business as an online tutor. Continue reading to find out how to advertise for yourself and your services.

How to advertise your tutoring services?

The first thing that you need to understand is that as a tutor you are selling a service and that your clients are and will be paying for your experience and talents.

There are thousands of tutors online so you need to figure out a way to create a tutoring service that is unique or that pops up from the rest.

The first step to advertise your work is by defining who is your target client. If you want to be a tutor but you don't have a clear idea of what subject you want to teach or who you want to teach then you will have a hard time getting started.

But if you know that you have experience and are trained to teach English to seniors in high school then you will have an easier time advertising for that audience.

The next step is figuring out which outlet or medium you want to use to promote your work. There are many options but you also won't want to use them all at once. For instance, if you want to run an ad on Facebook you should focus on learning about ads on that app instead of running ads everywhere and not being able to catch up.

You also need to figure out if you want to teach at a local, national, or international level. That way you can specify that in your profile and people can know exactly what you offer.

learning, tutor, study, teach

When you're talking to possible students or clients you can show them what a typical lesson or class looks like with you. That way they can figure out if they like your methods and if they would want to hire you.

The most important thing to do in advertising and marketing is to be transparent and honest about what you offer. If you make promises you need to keep them or else you will get bad publicity or reviews.

How can you become an online tutor?

Resources you can use

If you have a budget set for marketing then you should use it, but if you don't, don't worry! There are plenty of good resources available for free, you just need to learn to use them.

Here is a quick list of free resources you can find online to promote your teaching lessons:

  1. Create a profile on Superprof - students can look for the type of tutor they are looking for and you might pop up in their search, all you have to do is create a detailed profile.
  2. Embrace social media - these free platforms are very helpful for anyone starting out any sort of business. The downside is that you have to be really active and post constantly if you want your page to grow.
  3. Listing services - if you register in an online listing service your private lessons can be found easily on Google.
  4. Create a blog - if you create a blog and do SEO you can drive a lot of traffic to your website and you can turn that traffic into future clients.

Networking is key

Another great way to advertise your work is through networking.

Networking is defined as the "act of making contact and exchanging information with other people, groups, and institutions to develop mutually beneficial relationships, or to access and share information".

You can look for spaces online, a website, forums, group chats, or places where fellow tutors meet to discuss their work and make connections.

Facebook can be a great site to network because people are constantly connected and looking for clients or advertising their business.

You can look for a group where people post and share tips or resources, and even a job offer might pop up once in a while. Putting yourself out there is incredibly important, especially if you wish to grow your business and gain experience as a tutor.

Creating your own website is also a great way to network. You can create a business profile so that people can see your level of experience or what school you used to work for. If your information is up online then it makes it easier for someone looking for a tutor to find you through one simple search.

Finally, finding people who teach the same thing you're teaching can be helpful too because you can share tips. For example, imagine you are an English tutor and you don't know how to get your student to understand how to do book reviews. A colleague might be able to give you a fresh perspective and a new solution.

See, networking can also be about how to overcome the obstacles of your work and you don't have to do it alone.

You can be a wonderful teacher but if you don't share your experiences or you don't have a place where your current students can give you good or great reviews, then you won't be able to grow.

The whole point of networking is helping your community. That means that you can also help a fellow tutor who is starting out and needs a little guidance.

Networking is free as long as you have something to give back.
