When you go to the gym you may opt to take a class where you have an instructor who tells you what to do and how to do it using nothing but your body for the workout. Then there are some classes that require you to use some weights. While joining a class at the gym would mean you have the luxury of having an instructor with you to tell you how to use the necessary gym equipment for the class, the downside is you aren’t able to do things at the pace you want to do them. Additionally, group classes aren’t really designed for heavy lifters that want to get really muscular.

If you’re more inclined to do things at your own pace instead of listening to an instructor or if you’re focused on getting big, you’ll need to know the ins and outs of using the equipment at the gym. There are many types of equipment and depending on what area of the body you’d like to work out you’ll need to know how to use specific equipment or machines.

If you want to workout muscles, or if you’d like to improve your cardio there are different machines and weights that you’ll need to use. Not only knowing which weights are for building muscle is important, but you will also need to know which weights and equipment work out your chest, back, arms, legs, etc. Then you’ll need to know what equipment at the gym will help you build up your cardio as well as what machines can help you if you’re not ready to start lifting the heavy stuff without some assistance yet. Here is the layout for the equipment you’ll be using when you go to the gym.

Weights that help give you big muscles

If your objective at the gym is to have huge muscles then you’re going to need to be hitting the weights. If you’ve already been to the gym a few times and you’ve walked around the weight room then you’ve probably seen a typical gym that has plenty of different weight racks filled with all sorts of weights. Then you have some other weights that you’ll need to be sitting down and lifting. Of course, you know this will all help you add muscle, but what weights are best for which part of the body? This is information that is extremely helpful and will help you get the best out of yourself at the gym.

Dumbbells

Dumbbells are probably the most typical piece of gym equipment that you’re going to come across. They are also extremely useful, you can use dumbbells to work out basically any part of the body. Dumbbells are perhaps most closely associated with your arms. However, you can use dumbbells to work out your legs, back, and chest as well. Some exercises you can do with dumbbells are:

Bicep Curls

This exercise is incredibly easy to do. All you need to do as the name suggests is grab the dumbbell and curl your arm! As you put on muscle you’ll want to add weight and number of reps (number of times you do the exercise).

Back and Chest flies.

So you need for these exercises are, an incline bench and dumbbells, the dumbbells come in super handy with working out your chest and back with these exercises. Simply put the bench at an incline and if you are facing the ceiling grab the dumbbells, put them up above yourself and as if you were giving someone a hug, open your chest up then put your arms back in the starting position. Back Flies are exactly the same except you will be lying chest down on the incline bench.

Straight leg DL

This workout exercises your lower back, with these exercises all you have to do is grab your dumbbells, bend over without bending your legs and lift yourself up with your lower back muscles. Do a few sets of this and the muscles in your lower back will begin to start looking solid after some weeks.

Bench Press

Now, this is also a piece of equipment that features in just about any movie that has a workout montage. The bench press can be your chest’s best friend (or worst enemy depending on how you want to look at it). If you really want a big muscular chest you’ll need to start lifting with the bench press.

Flat bench press

There are two types of bench presses and for this one, you will need to adjust the weight by adding or decreasing weight to both ends of the bar. The bar is usually 10 pounds of weight, therefore if you have 40 pounds on both ends you’ll be lifting 90 pounds.

All you need to do is lay under the bar, hold it, push it up, bring it down to your chest, and push it back up and keep going as much as you can. This can be a dangerous exercise if you have too much weight. If you are trying to reach a new amount of weight or you feel what you want to lift is a lot it may be a good idea to have a spotter with you to help you lift the bar if need be.

Incline bench press

This is the same idea as the flat bench press. While the flat bench press works out your chest muscles as a whole, the incline bench press focuses on the upper portion of your chest muscles. Both types of bench presses can help you build a large chest.

Cardio Equipment at the gym

Another major reason people go to the gym is to improve their cardio fitness. While if you live in the countryside it can be very pleasant to go for a run somewhere in the mountains, or by a lake, many of us live in cities and finding a place to run or bike is a bit harder to come by. That’s why these types of gym equipment can help us get our cardio in without having to run around city blocks.

Treadmill

This is another basic piece of gym equipment that is part of every gym. Using the treadmill will help to improve your cardio every time you use it. As a tip make sure you use the incline feature as well while running or walking with a bit of weight.

Stationary bike

Stationary bikes just like treadmills are fantastic when you want to bike but perhaps you are stuck in the city or the weather outside just isn’t very comfortable for those of you who live up in the north of the U.S during winter.

Different weight machines at the gym

There are many different types of machines as well at the gym. These machines are a great help for those starting out who perhaps aren’t ready to lift the really heavy weights alone or if you need a break from the bench press and dumbbells. In a gym, there will typically be a machine that works out every body part.

However, this could depend on your gym such as if the gym is a bit more basic or luxurious. Machines can be incredibly useful as they can give you support, however they won’t exactly help you grow your muscles like dumbbells, the bench press, and other weights available to you can.

Which gym equipment will be the best for you?

It’s important to train all your muscles at some point. You don’t want to overwork your body so it’s really important to set up a schedule so that you can work out each body part as well as do cardio on a weekly basis. Having a personal trainer can help you to do just that! At Superprof there are many qualified personal trainers that can help you in person as well as over the internet.

Having a personal trainer can also help to motivate you to do better and also give you a schedule to help you achieve your goals and to help you in setting up a diet plan that can help you improve your physique and not waste your workouts.

Many gyms are very different and have different quality gym equipment and machines. There are many gyms that are famous or better for achieving that objective than certain other gyms.

Knowing the different types of gym equipment is necessary as we all go to the gym for one goal we want to reach or another. Going to the correct gym, and knowing what to do with the weights are key to helping us all stay or become fit and breaking our limits at the gym.
