Ensuring Child-Safety

This is arguably the most vital duty of a babysitter. In this line of work, you are primarily being paid to ensure the child's safety and security.

In all types of babysitting, child safety is the main concern! Whether the child is at home or outside playing, a sitter must be present and vigilant at all times. Children can be clumsy; therefore, it is essential to not look away, even for a minute. (Source: Unsplash)

You have to make sure the kids you're babysitting are completely safe both at home and if taken outdoors.

If you absolutely have to leave them unattended for a while to prep a bath or make lunch, make sure they are in a safe place.

In addition to that, do watch them regularly until your task is done. Or, you can use a baby monitor to supervise them while you're away!

Dressing  And Bathing Young Kids

A little kid is seen enjoying his bath in the tub. One useful tip for anyone planning to take up babysitting is: never leave a toddler alone near water. The number of risks associated with the situation are well documented and should be avoided
Most new babysitters find it extremely hard to bathe and dress babies. To ease the task of dressing and bathing, follow these practical, handy tips: take the child's clothes, soap, favorite toys, and towel along with you before beginning to bathe him/her. (Source: Unsplash)

Bath time can be fun for the kid; however, make sure you keep the child entertained while following the commonly used safety practices.

Before putting the kid into the tub, check the water temperature thoroughly, including the deepest parts, with your toes or inner forearm – the sensitive parts of your skin.

This is because young kids and infants have sensitive skin and can get burned easily if the water is hotter than it should be. Most of the time, you start running water for the bath, and you may not realize that it has become hot until it's finished running.

Apart from checking the bathtub's temperature, never leave the infant or the young kid unattended inside or near the bathtub.

Get all the toys, soap, towels, and other necessary things you'll require before running a bath. Make sure you are present with the kid at all times, no matter the circumstances.

It's okay to let the doorbell or phone go unanswered; keep your entire focus on the child as child safety is the first and foremost concern.

Changing Diapers

When toddlers soil their diapers, you must change them quickly; otherwise, they can either spread the mess or develop rashes.

A toddler is lying on the table waiting calmly for the babysitter to change his diaper. If you're new to babysitting and face soiled diapers for the first time, it may help to watch a YouTube tutorial and follow the steps in order!
Changing diapers when they are dirty or otherwise is one of the most important babysitting tasks. We recommend you to have all the supplies first, including a new diaper, cream or ointment, etc., before you start changing it. And be careful if you're using a table. (Source: Pixabay)

If you can't find a changing table or it's unavailable, carefully place the baby on a blanket on the ground and proceed to do the deed. But never turn yourself away from the baby as they can roll off the table.

Moreover, you should also be prepared with essential after-bath equipment such as baby powder, diapers, clothing, wet wipes, etc., to ensure you never have to leave the room.

Cleaning And Prepping Bottles For The Young Ones

Now that you've bathed them, it's time to put them to bed, and what gets them to sleep faster than anything else? A bottle!

Bottles must be sanitized and cleaned thoroughly. If the house has clean tap water, you can wash the baby's bottles in warm, soapy water.

For sanitation, you can place caps, bottles, teats, etc., in warm water for about 5-minutes to kill all the remaining bacteria you missed during washing.

The process is known as "sterilization." It is done normally until the baby turns 3-months old, after which washing the bottles alone will suffice.

Whenever you boil water to clean bottles, make sure the child is at a safe distance. This is because of the dangers associated with hot water.

Also, don't leave the boiling water pot on a gas stove unattended for the same reason! Turn its handles inward so that the toddler can't reach it.

A quick tip: clean bottles when the kid is asleep!

Preparing Snacks And Meals

Many college-going babysitters have reported that preparing snacks and meals for their little customers is the hardest part of their babysitting experience.

Prepping meals is another important part of babysitting. So, if you're looking for babysitting jobs, learn how to prep meals for children, as most parents prioritize this skill.

It's a challenging task! If you babysit a child with food allergies, you must have sufficient knowledge of the ingredients you use so you don't unknowingly harm the child. If you're new to the job, ask the parents and carefully outline the cooking instructions.

As a time-saving exercise, you can also list the prohibited foods on paper and paste them on the fridge to remember!

Plus, if you want good reviews from clients, learn to make exciting, healthy, and hearty versions of kid favorites such as spaghetti, hamburgers, muffins, cookies, tacos, and pizza.

Administering Medications

Administering medications is a vital responsibility for all babysitters. Like any other medication, kids' meds should also be administered precisely as specified.

You can see the dosage instructions on the medicine's packaging or look into the pharmacist or doctor's pamphlet. But you may not have to do this because the parents will usually fill you in on the medical requirements.

If the kid needs medicine, ensure you have the parents' detailed instructions and act accordingly. Make sure the instructions are in written form and never rely on memory.

A great idea is to make a list of medications and stick it next to the list of prohibited foods you put on the fridge!

Ensure you do exactly as parents requested you to do, and if you have any qualms, contact them immediately to clarify.

If you miss any scheduled meds for some reason, contact them right away and ask what you should do next!

Though it's the parent's chief responsibility to inform the babysitter about a kid's medicines, if the parents forget to tell you, you should ask them in advance.

That is the mark of a seasoned babysitter!

Discipline The Children

Many babysitters consider disciplining children to be the trickiest task. Though discipline is mainly the parent's responsibility; however, if they are away, the responsibility automatically falls upon your shoulders.

To get it done smoothly, learn the parent's favorite disciplining tactic and adhere to it in letter and spirit for speedy and consistent results.

For instance, some parents may use the time-out strategy to discourage misconduct. This strategy involves relegating the kid to their room or a corner for 1-10 minutes without entertainment until they learn their lesson.

The kids are normally placed in an alone, quiet, but safe space and can come back if they are ready to behave. Never yell, scold or strike the misbehaving kid — It's simply unacceptable and doesn't bear fruit!

And if you're responsible for more than one child, and they end up fighting, make sure to resolve the issue in a calm, kind, and safe manner. If you have doubts, discuss the matter with their parents.

Helping With School Homework

Broadly speaking, homework help falls in the tutoring domain and is not directly part of the babysitting job description. Nevertheless, if you have an agreement in place about helping kids with homework, you'll have to do it!

Normally, parents ask babysitters to lend a helping hand to their school-aged kids with homework. Ensure all tasks are complete before allowing them to watch TV, play indoor or outdoor games, or indulge in other activities.

Transporting Kids To Events And School

Not all babysitters are trusted with this responsibility. But if the primary guardians are busy, chances are you'll be entrusted with this task as well.

This responsibility usually falls on babysitters who also double as tutors; although these are different jobs, they can be done by the same person if the child has basic academic requirements.

If you are using a car, make sure to use an appropriately-sized kid seat for safety reasons. Kids above eight years don't need the booster seat; however, double-check it to be on the safe side.

Don't forget, kids' safety is your first priority, so ensure they have their seat belts on and the vehicle you drive for transportation is reliable. If possible, discuss it thoroughly with the guardian(s).
