I can show students that algebra should not be feared, in fact they have done some algebra in grade school they just didn't know it. Let me show you how easy algebra is. I can build that bridge from general math to beginning algebra.
I have a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in business management and have been working as an engineer for over thirty-five years.
This would be the first time I have taught basic math and algebra, but the main thing is I know how to get students over the bridge by teaching the number line, negative numbers, constants, variables and exponents. Once they make the transition from general math and understand the basic building blocks of algebra they can overcome their fear and tackle larger and more difficult lessons.
I can work with students that need to take algebra but are having difficulty making the change from general math to algebra concepts.
I have a solid understanding of general math and algebra. In my experience it's not the algebra that's difficult it the transition from general math to algebra that's difficult. My approach is to build that bridge between the two. If the student can add 2+2=4 then I can teach them algebra.
