I firt ascertain the level at which the student knows the game already, if they are complete beginners, I teach them how the pieces move, beginning with the rook, and ending with the pawn. I make sure they fully grasp the rules of the game. In subsequent lessons, I play against them, and give various puzzles showcasing different strategies(pins, traps, double attacks, and so on). I teach notation and tournament rules, and when ready, start playing games with tournament rules against them.
I am a recent college graduate who taught chess during college breaks for 2 years, I have taught both small groups, and one on one, for about 5 5 students total. My students, most of whom did not know how to play at all at first have learned how the game works and have advanced in gameplay to varying degrees.
