About Maura

I began studying French when I was in seventh grade. Even though I had completed my schools requirement for foreign language studies, I continued on to take AP French my senior year of high school.
In college, I studied abroad to Rouen, France for the fall semester of my sophomore year. I completed my bachelor's degree with a double major in Psychology and Francophone Studies. In college, I worked as a teaching assistant with some of the introductory to French classes. This meant that for an hour in the evening, I individually taught these students and reviewed the material they were studying in class. It was also an opportunity for me to engage the students and help them find what they connect with most within the language, be it vocabulary, writing, literature, music, or something else. First of all, I like to get to know the student I'm working with - what their background with the language is as well as why they chose to study French.
Based on this baseline information, I will know what vocabulary, tenses, and verb conjugations they are familiar with. I can then integrate a combination of vocabulary learning, verb conjugation (past, present, future) and sentence structure, as well as appropriate reading material for their education level for the most well rounded understanding of the language.
Additionally, I like to keep students completely engaged by incorporating some aspect of pop culture - for example, listening to a French song and identifying vocabulary or verbs that they can identify. I find that this fun approach keeps students even more interested and invested in their learning.
