About the lesson
With OG tutoring, the student is always using at least 2 senses at the same time; For example, a student might be feeling the sounds of a letter or group of a letters as they write them in a sand or salt tray, saying the sound out loud as they are writing; The student might even be feeling what position their mouth is in as they make the sound.
Dyslexics and other struggling readers are creative, divergent thinkers, but their mental processor for sounds and words can be inefficient so that he or she adds or deletes sounds when sounding out a word. The student may read a word on a page and then when he see it again, he doesn't recognize it.
With visual, auditory, and blending of sounds (drills), a new concept section (ie. learning a new spelling rule or syllable pattern for word attack), a word or passage reading section, a generalized spelling section, and a syllable division section, students who struggle to decode, spell, and write now have a more efficient filing system and GPS for the brain! Even students without reading disabilities benefit greatly from organized and incremental Structured Literacy lessons.
I also offer paragraph and essay writing basics , using special graphic organizers and other techniques I picked up from trainings over the years. I can help your child write their personal statements for high school and college .
I offer engaging in-person lessons as well as interactive online lessons as well! I incorporate phonic games whenever possible to keep students plugging along towards their goals.
From pre-k through high school, I tailor lessons to the child's age and temperament. I have personal experience teaching my own child with ADHD to read and helping her organize her school work into measurable chunks.
The first lesson/assessment is free. Feel free to contact this San Francisco native for a free trial assessment!
Good luck and be well,
- All Levels
Is your child struggling with reading or writing? Is distance learning taking it's toll--or does your child just needs an extra boost?
With a background in Educational Therapy and Special Education, I'm a certified Orton-Gillingham practitioner who has helped students move up 2-4 levels in reading using this research-backed, explicit, multi-sensory method.
This method and other structured literacy methods I pull from including “Lindamood-Bell” and “Lively Letters”, improves phonemic awareness (a predictor of later reading success) which is the ability to hear all the sounds in words and to manipulate these sounds, phonics (sound-symbol relationship for decoding--the sounding out words), sight word /rote word recognition (words that don't always play by the rules and fill up 3/4 of a book), morphology (meaningful parts of words such has roots, prefixes, and suffixes), the structure of sentences (syntax and semantics), and beyond!
Elana has been working with my son for the last two years and has dramatically improved his reading and writing skills.
Whether we work in person at our house, at her house or on Zoom, she is able to keep him focused and on task. We have been very happy with his progress and he has gained an interest in reading on his own.
