Dr. B’s Bio
Hi Everyone!
I'm Dr. Carl Beekman (I go by Dr. B) and I have a Ph.D. in multicultural Education/Creative Writing, The Union Institute, Cincinnati, OH. Title of dissertation: A Study of Multicultural Education--The Emphatic Way--Focusing on Social Anthropology and Social Psychology as it Relates to the Native American.

I was born bi-racial, Cherokee and Anglo, on a ranch in Southern Indiana, where we had horses, cattle and grain. I was just about born in the saddle.

My saddles are sitting on a ‘saw-horse’ in my office -- so, that might show you that I’m a little eclectic.

My wife and I live on a golf course, par 5 (11th fairway), in Kissimmee, FL. I enjoy golf…I used to score in the high 70’s to low 80’s, but since it’s been quite a while, I’ll just throw a ‘heck-u-va’ party breaking 100.

Leisure? Fun? I do not allow anything in my life that would even hint of such nonsense…..KIDDING!

My academic background includes administrative experience as an Assistant Superintendent for Academics on the Navajo Reservation, Assistant Principal for a Native American High School (Boarding School) in South Dakota, and Principal for an Elementary/Junior High School in Indiana.

My teaching experience includes teaching in the inner city, teaching Native American students from more than 40+ tribes. I have taught grades K-12 as well as developed and taught undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses. I have also designed and implemented individual transition plans and curriculum.

In addition, I have compiled a vast array of innovative methods of teaching culturally and ethnically diverse student populations in order to celebrate each group's diversity and their commonalities.

I also really enjoy online facilitation/instruction.

Last, but not by any means least; teaching and learning should be fun!! I love humor in whatever I'm doing, and I'm really looking forward in working with all of you and reading your bios as well!

Walk in beauty.

Dr. B

Background

Teaching Philosophy

On the first day of class, I have the students share the following:

1. Introduce yourself.
o Give your name
o City/state
o What motivates you?
o How do you define success?
o What you hope to gain from this course.
o Tell us something that excites you creatively, spiritually or emotionally.
o What is the best way for you to learn?
o Have you decided what you want by achieving your quest for education?
o What do you need to do to make you be a better student?
o What does success look like?
My philosophy:

• Teaching and learning should be fun.
• Respect all students.
• Give weekly personal feedback to all students.
• Communicate with all students.
• Be clear to them what my expectations are for their class.
• Create a warm and positive online environment.
• Encourage students to participate in meaningful discussion using critical thinking techniques.
• Use the Socratic approach to enhance their learning experience.
• Enhance scholarly writing abilities.
• Encourage students to continue with their education and to prepare for their next classes.
• eMail students that you feel are needing help.
• Assist students in writing more scholarly.
• Helping students to become a change agent.
• Set students up for success – never failure.
