My teaching method is getting the student to understand the why behind what they are working on. When you understand why I believe you now have the ability to critical think and solve a problem. You begin to create your own "aha! I can do it like this or that...etc" moments
I am an engineer by profession, I've work in 2 labs (1 still actively). One was the study of dark matter through nuclei collisions under the assumption that dark matter is WIMPs, the other is the study of super critical CO_2 used for power generation.
