While my approach with each student may vary I try to follow the rule of three. Student must learn and review a topic multiple times to retain it well. For Literature the first encounter will be reading the story. Then we would review the story together with a set of questions that encourage more critical thought about the story. After that we would read another story with similar themes or literary devices. Then for our final encounter we would look back at both stories and compare. This allows for analysis not just of the story, but also authors' style, tone, diction etc. Finally we might have a short quiz to really solidify the information learned.
I scored very well in English (35) and Reading (36) on the ACT. I have experience tutoring for Literature with Academic Decathalon. I also have tutored my three younger sisters on a variety of subejcts including Math, English, and Lit.
