The first step as a tutor is to understand the student's skill set and how that aligns with their class. The best way to achieve this is to ask for sample writing or to provide a small topic. The overall goal is to improve their skills so that they succeed beyond their current class and can take these skills with them.
I have been tutoring people for more than 3 years, however, in the last 3 I have received payment for my time. I have taught/tutored over 15 people. I typically work with high school students, but have experience with middle school and college students.
I also have worked at two newspapers, one in high school and now professionally at The Alestle. I have experience in copy editing and writing in journalism, as well as various other genres in English.
