Lesson Duration: 90min
Typically the first 60 minutes are dedicated to conditioning, structured improvisation, and technical exercises and passes across the floor.
The remaining 30 minutes are dedicated to learning prepared phrase work in which the techniques we covered in the beginning of class can be further explored.
Time can also be set aside for choreography workshops if student would like to deepen their own choreographic skills and knowledge.
Classes are for students beginner to pre-professional. The importance of these classes lie in each student gaining a deeper understanding of the mechanics of how their body can flow through the movement safely and efficiently. The emphasis is placed on each student's individual goals!
Mikala Nims-Bartley began her exploration of dance at the age of 5. She trained in ballet, Jazz, hip hop, tap, and contemporary, but found her love for modern in 8th grade after training in Horton at Boston Youth Moves. In high school she expanded her interest into theatre. She performed for the LSB players and choreographed three musicals for the Acton Cooperative Theatre. She finished her senior year by competing for the On Your Toes Dance & Theater Company, and ended the season as a student ambassador for the Step Up 2 Dance Nationals.
Mikala attended Roger Williams University from 2017-2021. Her Junior year she studied modern dance in London for a semester while co-choreographing a dance film and learning from choreographers such as Renaud Wiser. At Roger Williams Mikala choreographed three large group pieces in which two were site specific works outdoors, and choreographed various solo works. She was a co-producer for the dance department's Jr/Sr Show. Her first solo dance film was screened at Roger Williams in May 2021.
After receiving an award for her research, which explored the perpetuation of cultural appropriation in dance academia, she plans to utilize her second major of anthropology/sociology to use dance to energize social change.

Not only does Mikala come prepared for every lesson, question, or idea we throw at her, she knows exactly how to make every class fun. We learned so much technique and spent an equal amount of time applying it into a new choreography! She encouraged us to choreograph some dances and guided us when we needed help. We learned so much and the improvement was visible! Could not have asked for a better teacher!
