I guide every student to master basic fundamental functions of the voice to ensure they have no deficiencies that can lead to injury. This means starting the race slow and finishing stronger than the rest. There are no shortcuts to achieving excellence!
I am a singing voice instructor, professional singer, and licensed voice therapy assistant. I have advanced training and have taught at some of the best music programs in the country. I teach in most styles, specializing in building flawless foundations for beginners, and assist rehabilitation for advanced singers with damaged voices. I help students just like you to sing longer, stronger, and with less effort in your favorite style!
Dr. Charles “Chip” Dugan is OUTSTANDING in his field!
No matter where you are in your development as a singer, Dr. Dugan, or “Coach Chip” as I call him, will elevate and up your Vocal Game beyond any Voice Instructor, Voice Teacher, or, as in my case, Voice Coach, you have ever encountered... by a long shot.
His depth of knowledge about the voice, hands-on-experience as an active and working professional Opera Singer (Tenor), and certifications across multiple different voice methods, schools of thought, techniques, and approaches to voice, and vocal training and performance, inspire each lesson, or session, accordingly, for each student, and are custom tailored to your own goals (my own focus area shared below ), translating into rapid-fire improvements in your range, projection, onset options, stylization options, and stamina... even your stage posture...
... and perhaps, most importantly, through the twist of fate that led me to Dr. Dugan, Coach Chip, in the first place...
... his approach will help you to achieve vocal longevity, and keep you singing without damaging your voice and getting sidelined as you progress ever further, and keep getting even better with each passing week.
I met Dr. Dugan, after having been invited by a colleague of his at the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL) Frost School of Music to attend a lecture as a guest singer, on the topic of Voice Therapy and Vocal Recovery.
I had lost my voice about a year prior, for a short time, at the speech level, and more frustratingly for me, as a Professional Singer, across my entire singing range, to the point I had to seek professional help and was very worried.
I would start to sing, and my voice would just, effectively, lock up, and I couldn’t produce sound sometimes, in certain ranges of my register at all.
My genre as a professional singer happens to be Hard Rock and Metal - which require specialized knowledge and training in “Extended Vocal Techniques” and an athletic-type approach to Voice Training, and not being able to sing freaked me out!
I went to UM’s Miller School of Medicine to their specialized Otolaryngology program that is world renown for helping Singers, and did all the “MD stuff” - and was prescribed about a years worth of therapy with one of their top PhD track therapists.
My situation was a combination of too much stress in my life, in general, and the development of some unbalanced habits ( I eventually learned, as I rehabilitated my voice, and then progressed on) - which caused a sort of protection mechanism to kick in... it helped to know that this was not unheard of for singers, or actors...
As my voice recovery progressed, which was NOT an easy road, it was suggested that I start working with a Voice Coach who also had a background in voice recovery and voice therapy, and from being a guest vocalist for this specialized class at UM, I met Coach Chip.
My medical voice therapist made the formal introduction and I was approved to start supplementing my Voice Therapy with voice training again, by my Doctor.
Coach Chip and I just “clicked” from the start :)
To be direct, not only did I recover all of my range with Coach Chip’s help, but I went beyond anything I had previously accomplished on my own time ( I self-trained for about 5 years after having started off w formal Opera lessons) in our training together... way beyond!
I now have the best command of my onset choices, and styling options, increased Tessitura range, increased upper register range (B6 - with more to come!!!), dramatically reduced Passaggio “shifting”, greater control of Messa di Voce and dynamics... Than I EVER have in my entire singing career (over 10 years now)!
And to top it all off, I have had some of the most interesting conversations of my life, as well, with Coach Chip, about singing and the mechanics and concepts of singing, that have been not only fascinating, but conceptually useful to boot!
Coach Chip will deliver RESULTS for you - no matter your genre, and your goals.
His passion IS the VOICE!
DROP YOUR CURRENT TEACHER, and switch to Coach Chip!!!
... but if you don’t, you will literally watch your local voice-rivals blow right past you in less time than you could belt out a Do-Re-Mi.
He is relocating from Miami - to Pittsburgh in Fall of 2020 - but he is so good, I will continue to work with him!
... Despite the planning and distance challenges, and my selfish reasons for wishing he wasn’t moving...
... Because I want to continue working with him in person - as the ceiling is not even close to being hit yet in our sessions together...
But most importantly, because no one else I’ve been around to date, yet, “gets it” like Coach Chip.
Fortunate to have met through unfortunate prior events,
Professional Rock Singer
Dr. Dugan is such an incredible teacher and person. Never before have I so looked forward to voice lessons and had such a fun time singing, than I have working with him. He is a wonderful singer with an incredible range who can work with you on a number of singing styles. From opera to pop, or musical theatre to rock, he can help you reach your fullest potential with them all. He teaches you to analyze all aspects of a song, working on technical training as well as storytelling. I trained with him throughout high school, and he prepared me for pursuing, not only a BFA in musical theatre, but a future career in the arts. Training with Dr. Dugan was paramount to my development as a singer. In fact, I still use his vocal warm-up to this day :) Cannot recommend working with Dr. Dugan enough!
Dr. Dugan helped me grow immensely as a singer in the 3 years that we worked together. He always showed interest in not only how I was singing but I how everything was going for me. He is extremely knowledgeable and was able to help me think critically about any questions I had. Would recommend to anyone!
Dr. Dugan is one of the most dedicated, thoughtful, and talented teaching artists I have had the pleasure of knowing in my over fifteen years in higher education. He is a brilliant writer and thinker, and a captivating speaker. Dr. Dugan's colleagues and students look to him for unrivaled presence, patience, and wisdom. He consistently conducts his business in an organized way without much need for extrinsic motivation or acknowledgement, and is a stalwart inspiration to those lucky enough to know him. On top of all that, he is a genuine and loyal friend and a delight to be around. Dr. Dugan has my highest recommendation.
Dr. Charles Dugan was my private voice teacher for 3 years. He helped me develop and refine my singing voice, stage presence, and overall knowledge of the voice and body. His in depth knowledge of the voice and repertoire makes for a successful and productive learning process. I grew as a singer and person in my time with Charles, and I am very lucky that he was a part of my musical journey.
