With math tutoring, I like to: 1.) Start with the homework as a base, 2.) Go over the content that the student does not understand, 3.) Give practice problems, and 4.) Then, see if there are any earlier concepts missing and, if so, address those . We do not have to do things in that order, and the student's questions may lead the sessions. Lessons might include videos, practice problems, Kahoot games, or flashcards, as needed.
I have a degree in PreK-4 Education and passing Praxis scores in Middle School Mathematics. In college, I volunteered with AmeriCorps to provide homework help to elementary-aged students. Also, I provided study aids to a student whose grades went up the following marking period, and received feedback from a 7th grade math student that my explanation helped her understand the concept she was learning.
