I really believe in repetition and incorporating different kinds of learning from lecture to hands on practice. Focusing on specific areas of difficulty until they understand it simply is core.
A typical lesson would include:
- going over any pressing questions or topics that a student may have
- reviewing their current material and refreshing their understanding through slight lecture
- Basic walk throughs of some of the problems that may be on their homework or classwork
- Finishing with assigning a couple highlighting problems (if necessary) and notes that will help them in the future
I have had my share of trouble of with math and other topics so I want to really focus on the understanding of topics rather than repetitive, grueling processes. I also know how to look for when it becomes overwhelming or stressful and can be very accommodating.
Lessons for math can be anywhere from elementary school arithmetic to lower level college courses in Calculus or Trigonometry. In science, I am mostly comfortable in Physics and lower chemistry but can accommodate for other topics!
Hey there! I am Oliver and I am from Ithaca, New York!
I grew up in town with a heavy emphasis on academics. With two internationally recognized universities, my high school was essentially a funnel school into Ivy league programs all over the country. There I excelled in science, math and engineering. I attended a very good school in Canada in engineering for one year and then decided it wasn't for me.
The academic world can be extremely rigorous, competitive and unforgiving so stepping away was really important for me. I focused on more personal experiences and tried to grow in other areas like in music and outdoor adventures. I became invested in rock climbing, tree climbing and other activities that enriched myself.
Through my experiences, came to appreciate balance between life and rigor in professional academics and professional goals. This is what I want to bring to teaching and try to take some of the un-needed pressure out of the picture. While I excelled in math and science relative to a lot of people, I had my own struggles with it and can recognize and empathize with it in other people which I think can set me apart from other tutors. I have also had experience teaching music to kids and leading rock climbing and other outdoor activities with children.
Eventually, I would like to get into guiding tree or rock climbing and then continuing school to get a degree in Engineering. For now, I work in a restaurant and am just enjoying interacting with different people all the time!
