About the lesson
I hold BA in Serbo-Croatian language from University of Zagreb and a master’s license in TESOL from UNI and have nearly twenty years of teaching experience.
My teaching has ranged from elementary, middle and high school through the college level in various subjects affiliated with languages and literature.
In my instruction, I aligned NY state CCLS with classrooms' objectives and specific needs of very diverse students (emphasized rigor and academic language acquisition). In adition to project-based learning, I used interdisciplinary approach to teach language through science, social studies, math, art and music content.
Being goal-oriented and believing in the right each student has for a chance to learn, I am determined and committed to the highest standards. Working on students’ academic, emotional and social well-being is my teaching credo. I received Chavez award in 2011 for exemplary teaching and advocacy for ELLs.

About Mirsa
I teach languages and literature since 1987. Recently, I co-taught with content area teachers (literacy, social studies and math) at STEM Carver Academy in Iowa. Since that was a low-performing school, we focused on rigorous curriculum and preparation for academic success, collaboration and providing support to classroom teachers in needed areas, with high commitment and accountability. Our students outperform other schools on regents' tests.
For last three years, I taught ESL classes at PS79M High School in Harlem through different models of instruction. All of my 64 students were SPED students and required careful planning and adjusting instruction to their specific needs. The ultimate goal was to provide ESLCommon Core Learning Standards (CCLS) well aligned with SPED and NYSCCLS. I had to be creative and show high level of collaboration and teamwork as I served as a co-teacher in most of those classes. My lessons inspired, motivated and provoked intellectual curiosity showing what special needs students are capable of.
