As an experienced teacher, I love to learn, whether it's in a certain subject or a focus on how to best serve my students, but I also appreciate that everyone learns in a unique way, and it is my goal as a teacher to not only help them learn according to their strengths, but also to inspire them to become independent, life-long learners.
In my 8 years of teaching, I have had the opportunity to teach music, Spanish K-12, middle school and upper level math, physics, religion, and essay writing. Although I have not actively taught it in the classroom, I have also tutored in German, history, and literature.
In math, I focus on middle school math, including pre-algebra and algebra I, in order to help build strong number sense and basic algebraic skills that are the building blocks for all upper level math courses. I also tutor in some upper level math courses, such as Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
I am fluent in German, Italian, and Spanish and have taught foreign language for 7 years, and I recognize that second languages can be one of the most difficult courses, especially with the strong focus on grammar, so I focus on grammatical comprehension, not only in the target language but also in English, which ultimately will help them transfer their skills to other foreign languages. I also focus on oral skills and also listening skills.
As a tutor, I have both short and long-term goals for my students. My greatest long-term goal is to help the student become an independent learner, so not only to focus on the specific subject, but also to help them develop study skills that they can transfer to other courses and content. For each individual session, we also will come up with a plan before our next session to always ensure that we are moving forward.
Past education includes a B.A. in German Language and Literature from Johns Hopkins University in 2009, an M.A. in Learning and Teaching with a focus in Music Education both instrumental and vocal in 2011, and I am currently pursuing my M.A. in Theology from Saint Mary Seminary.
