About Lissette

I’m an expert native Spanish teacher with over 25 years of experience teaching applied, conversational Spanish for real-world use. I grew up speaking Spanish, and all of my relatives are native Spanish speakers, which gives me a deep, lived understanding of the language and its cultural nuance. I’m fully bilingual in Spanish and English and hold California CSET Spanish teaching credentials. I also earned a Master’s degree in Telecommunication Arts from the University of Michigan, which informs my clear, structured approach to communication. In addition to my teaching background, I’m a professional singer and performer with television experience, and I’ve helped actors, singers, and other professionals develop confident, expressive Spanish. I’ll also be sharing short lessons, artistic work, and lifestyle content on my new Instagram page, offering students insight into real, lived language in use. I work with all levels, from true beginners to advanced and heritage speakers.

ABOUT ME:

EXPERIENCED SPANISH TEACHER:
I have 25 years of experience teaching Spanish. I have helped students learn Spanish from beginner to advanced levels. After teaching so many students throughout the years, I intuitively know how people learn a language. A lot of these students were high school and college students looking to do well in their Spanish classes, many are professionals looking to do business in Spanish speaking countries and others take Spanish lessons for personal reasons.

—Native Speaker:
I didn’t speak English until I turned 18 years old. I'm a native Spanish speaker who has been reading Latin American and Spanish novels since middle school. I grew up around Spanish nuns who were very serious about language skills. I tested out of language requirements (took an advanced Spanish test) in college and started teaching Spanish after I graduated.

—Advanced English and Spanish Skills:
I know both English and Spanish really well, so I can explain complicated Spanish concepts and phrases to you in English, which expedites your learning. I will also help you understand how Spanish and English are different so that you don't get confused with tricky grammar rules and word order.

Education: After speaking only Spanish all my life, I went to Ohio State University and earned a degree in Journalism and Advertising. After graduation, I obtained a Master’s degree in Telecommunications Arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I graduated with honors from both programs and was awarded a full fellowship for my master’s degree. Since then, I have worked in the arts for years but always taught students on the side after graduation. My work in the arts includes owning a venue for many years where artists performed music shows, comedy events, and plays. It also includes singing and many of my music videos and performances will be in my new Instagram page, which will also include mini Spanish lessons, as well as other subjects that interest me, such as literature, photography, video and so on.

—California (CSET) Test:

—I took the Spanish tests required to teach Spanish in California (CSET) and received top scores in all categories:
linguistics, reading, culture, grammar, literature, spoken and writing skills. You can rest assured that my language skills are top-notch.
My English skills are strong as well because of my educational background.

—I Know Grammar Rules by Heart:
After more than two decades of teaching Spanish and tutoring high school and college students, I can teach grammar rules to you while providing spoken drills and conversing with you in Spanish!

—Complete Process from Beginning Skills to Advanced:
I have helped students over the years learn Spanish from scratch to advanced skills, creating personal relationships that last a long time, as I also help them keep their language skills current. I even help them sharpen their language skills at work. Throughout the months, I refine my students’ diction and help them transition to Spanish-speaking countries, jobs that demand Spanish skills, or even joining a Spanish-speaking family.

—CLIENTS INCLUDE:
Second-generation Latinos who need someone to help them bridge the gap between the Spanish they know and advanced Spanish.
Clients moving to a Spanish-speaking country.
Clients looking to learn Spanish in order to speak to relatives.
Students doing business in Latin America/Spain.
Students who own vacation homes in Spanish-speaking countries.
Folks who want to learn Spanish so they can speak to their significant other and children.

I have helped employees understand their coworkers and bosses. I have helped supervisors communicate instructions efficiently. My clients include lawyers, doctors, nurses, TV/film personalities, waiters, diplomats, contractors, financial investors, entrepreneurs, singers, working actors, thespians, writers, TV producers, editors, office staff, librarians, fashion designers, interior designers, politicians, Spanish teachers, dentists, psychologists, PhD students, peace corps, police officers, record industry professionals, and more.

MY ARTS TRAINING AND WORK:

—Because of my training and work (singing, producing, etc.) in the arts, I have been able to help other performers learn Spanish. Here are links to some of my work in the arts:

Emmy-winning entertainers, writers, and directors looking to improve their Spanish.
Actors trying to master an accent for a play, TV show, or film.

AVERAGE TIMETABLE TO LEARN SPANISH:

-From One to Three Months: Transactional Spanish/travel Spanish/tourist Spanish. Basic conversational Spanish.

-From Three to Six Months: You will understand sentence structure and be able to communicate with others using simple phrases. You will be able to hold short conversations.

-From Six Months to a Year: My clients’ skills include:
---Sustaining simple conversations with new acquaintances and old friends who speak Spanish. Getting used to speaking Spanish and holding one-on-one conversations.
---Having conversations in several tenses.
---Sustaining a job that requires basic (intermediate and advanced too) Spanish skills by interacting with coworkers and clients in Spanish.

-From One Year On: Students are now in an intermediate/advanced phase and feel more comfortable exploring more advanced books and TV shows than ever before. At this stage, students feel confident maintaining conversations. They are now polishing their knowledge and becoming much more precise in their conversations with Spanish speakers.
