I use Modeling Instruction in my class. In Modeling Instruction, the lab experience begins the Unit to develop the scientific concept. Rather relying equations alone, we develop multiple representational tools such as graphs, motion maps and energy bar charts. After developing the Model from the initial lab experience, we begin deploying the Model to solve problems and make predictions.
After college I served in the US Navy for 7 years as a Nuclear Engineer. I left the Navy and became a high school Physics Teacher. In 1995 I joined the Modeling Workshop for High School Physics a National Science Foundation funded movement to improve Physics Instruction. I was quickly asked to be a Workshop Leader for the program. For the next years, I both taught high school Physics and ran workshops across the US and internationally. You will be hard pressed to find someone with more Physics teaching than I have.
