I have worked particularly with anglophone/multilingual children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old in french dual language programs, as well as all (including francophone) students in immersion settings. I have also tutored high school and college level french students. With all ages I aim to really include practical, fun, and applicable usage of the language ! I aim to tailor my lessons to the student in terms of what they like and how they would use the language, as well as their learning methods. Everyone has a different learning style and thus I enjoy getting to know my students to personalize lessons and lesson content to places and situations they would use the language in their lives. In extension, I find that teaching phonology is also very key for adult learners, as well as colloquial and cultural aspects.
I have been tutoring students in dual language programs for over a year now and adults for an additional 2 years! Many anglophone children I worked with came from having zero background in French and understandably so, felt hindered by their lack of connection the language and culture. This manifested in a sense of timidness and lack of confidence. However, what is most rewarding to me is seeing the moment when my students start to see they are capable and can quickly learn regardless of their native tongue ! Especially given such a young age, my more immersion, fun, playful, yet academically tailored approach results in students quickly improving on all aspects of language - reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. In terms of adults, I thoroughly enjoy finding a sort of connection between the student and the culture (music, film, art, literature, sports, etc.), as well as including immersion when appropriate because believe it or not- adults can pick up languages quickly in immersive settings! Students I've worked with have jumped reading levels quicker than I imagined, college students raising their As from Bs, and overall developing a higher level of self confidence and enjoyment with the learning of the language.
