The best answer to a question is another question. If a student is struggling with a certain concept, it is not enough to give him or her the equations or the solutions outright. If the student can come to his own understanding of the concept, guided by smaller, easier questions from the instructor, then he will remember that concept forever. When teaching, I try to avoid giving students the easiest equation or method to solving the problem at hand. Instead, I do my best to get them thinking in the right direction using bigger-picture questions that narrow down to the problem. When they finally come to their own solution, they have created a mental pathway to solving the problem that they will never forget.
