About the lesson

This lesson is for adult students (lower-level ESL students). However, it could be used for high school ESL students. First of all, I explain the concept being taught today. I give examples and do a few drills with the students to make sure they understand the concept. Once I am confident that the students have captured the concept, we will do some exercises.

Lesson: Using do, does, and did as auxiliary verbs in yes/no questions.
1. Question format for yes/no questions is: Auxiliary + subject + simple verb.
2. Do and does are used in the present tense.
3, Do is used for questions about you, I, and a plural subject.
Ex. Do you understand the question?
4. Does is used for questions asked to a third person (he, she, it) in the present tense.
Ex. Does Susan understand the question? (Notice that the verb "understand" is in the present tense because the auxiliary "does" indicates the third person singular.)
5. Did is used as the auxiliary in the past tense for any person (singular or plural).
Ex> Did the class understand the question? (notice that the main verb (understand) is in the present tense because "Did" , the auxiliary, is in the past tense.
