In high school, I liked band (trumpet player),science (Physics), math (geometry) and Spanish. Unlike a lot of kids, I liked to go up to the blackboard and work examples - I didn't get them always but I appreciated the fact that participation made enthused the teachers. I went on to attend junior college where I graduated as an electronics technician. After working for a radar manufacturer, I attended a 4-year university where I majored in mathematics and minored in electronics engineering.
As a teacher, I like to put up the examples on the board of the kinds of problems that the class is working on. As I write the examples down, I ask the students what I just did and why and what the next step should be. I love it when they are getting interested and giving me answers. As I progress I allow students to come to the board and solve similar problems but where I am right there ready to coach them if they get either confused or stuck.
I've been assigned to teach and also to substitute in math classes where I would either solve the regular teacher's problems or put up my own either on the board or on quizzes. I try to give hints which gives the students confidence and maintains their attention and interest. I have worked in many classrooms of from 26 to 38 students. I was a full time math/science teacher in a middle school (6th & 8th) grade for a year (riverside County) and then worked as both a short term and long term teacher in middle and high schools in San Diego County. the students that I helped almost always got better grades - particularly in the math classes I taught or substituted in.
