My teaching method has its roots in describing words and language structure as tools for looking at the world. Like any craftsman, we all need to learn what those tools are able to do, how to put them to our own purposes. So we start by learning the names and the uses. And then start using them, with concious intent to create meaning and self-expression.
How all this is presented to the student is a function of the individual student's age, and
I studied all the classic writers in the English language as a college student, and have never stopped reading, and then writing about what their words did to and for me. I
have been a technical writer, a business proposal author, and have written project summaries and conclusions report for client top management. I also wrote a great many programs as well as training manuals for operations staff. I guess the point is that once you can think clearly, there is no limit to how you can express your knowledge , your opinions and your needs. This is, i believe, the greatest gift humans have inherited; and it all comes from being able to use words.
