Highly-experienced Molecular Biology and Biochemist gives personalized individual lessons to biology students

Methodology

My approach is to carefully assess the students understanding to identify gaps or any confusion in curriculum. Accepting what you do not know or struggle with is one of the most important steps to take when developing a new skill or learning new material. Working through these challenges is not always easy, but with a uniquely tailored approach to each student, I'm confident that I can help teach and reaffirm the material to find success.

Background

I am a molecular biologist and biochemist with 2 years of hands-on research experience from Lewis and Clark College. I have a bachelor's degree in biology, although my scientific interests extend beyond biology into chemistry, biotechnology, physiology, biochemistry, and ecology.

Evolution and Genetics
1 semester with lab
Experience with Drosophila melanogaster: identified sex, anesthetized, and performed statistical analysis tests including chi-square, ANOVA, and t-test analysis.

Molecular Biology
1 semester with lab
Independent Project: Tested luciferase reporter assay to test KLF4 transcriptional activity.
Experienced in gel electrophoresis, PCR, bioinformatics, E. coli cell cultures, site-directed mutagenesis, restriction enzyme digests, micropipetting, centrifugation, pouring and loading gels.

Cellular Biology
1 semester with lab
Characterized effects of Sicariid venom toxins on model organisms, including C. elegans, Drosophila m., and smooth cardiac muscle cell cultures. Quantified autophagy detection in C. elegans using fluorescence microscopy. Trained in C. elegan techniques including picking, scoring, setting up genetic crosses, slide preparation, and imaging.

Comparative Physiology
1 semester with lab
Investigated neuromuscular system of gastrocnemius muscle from Rana pipiens. Additional investigation include exploration of cardiac and respiratory system as a function of nasal inhalant exposure.
