About Rick

I have fourteen years experience in classroom teaching, and five teaching online. My classroom experience was varied over my career, with classes from the toddler level to working adults. I taught IELTS and TOEFL at Shanghai Jiaotong University for two years. For the last five years I have specialized in Zoom and Zhumu based tutoring focusing on students aged 12-18. These tutoring sessions are either one-on-one or small groups no larger than four students. My tutoring emphasis has been college prep in the areas of ESL, writing, history, social studies, art, and STEM. I have experience teaching both native English speakers and international students.

Patience and clear explanations are required for all learners. I a not worried about this or that mistake, but in overall progress. My lessons are based on a complete understanding of the material, not dates, to ensure the student fully grasps the skills taught. Students should be able to communicate what they have learned, so I emphasize giving the students plenty of time to talk and explain. I work hard to teach my students how to clearly express their thoughts and feelings both aloud and in their writing. Given a safe and encouraging environment, I know my students can achieve their goals!
