It is difficult to define a single approach to teaching that will fit each student. However, I know that the only way someone can truly learn is to try themselves, make mistakes, and keep trying—practice makes perfect isn’t just a platitude, it’s true.
That being said, I would expect my students to bring all supplies needed for their assignment(s) to our meeting. After discussing the desired outcomes and teacher’s expectations for an assignment, I would give examples and illustrate the lesson further, tailored to the student’s specific needs and questions. At this point, I would have the student begin to work on either the assignment or similar practice work. Together, we would go over the work, discus what was wrong and WHY, discuss what was right and have the student explain how they got there.
This method has helped me everywhere from tutoring k-12 English and math to training up new employees at my job.
I received a bachelor’s degree in English (minors in political science in Spanish) from MTSU’s Honors College where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with an undergraduate thesis under my belt. I am a published poet with a history of awards and accolades for writing. While nannying, working in a daycare, and participating in a Marine Corps JROTC program, I gained tutoring experience. I have worked with special needs children, gifted children, and anything in between (though those two often overlap), and I am willing and able to meet each individual where they are at.
I was in several English classes with Hannah in high school. She was always a top student and her feedback on my writing was always so helpful! Her passion for writing and English is clear, and she's great at explaining her thoughts and recommendations!
Hannah was my student in an intense honors histiry and literature course at Volunteer State Community College for 2 semesters. She thoroughly loves to learn which will make her a fantastic tutor. Hannah is reliable, dedicated, kind, funny and smart. She is patient and a generous listener ( another good trait for a teacher). I highly recommend Hannah. I would absolutely trust her with my own child.
