Ivy Leaguer Graduate Student offering Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Environmental Science, French, and Singing

Methodology

I can teach High School and College students. My teaching methods and strategies include 'Flipped Classroom' (urging the student(s) to prepare for the topic before each session), Visualization (teaching through PowerPoint presentation, drawings, etc.), Active Learning (e.g. one-on-one or group discussions/debates), and Student Effort Recognition.
I base my classes on lectures, discussions, hands-on practices, and assignments using real-life examples, social media, and online interactive learning tools.
I approach each topic by giving a short overview of it (to avoid a boring lecture!), sharing some anecdotes related to the topic, encouraging student(s) to ask questions and give feedback, then breaking them into two camps (for more than 1 student) to debate “similarities and/or differences” in the topic’s concepts.

Background

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology (specializing in Archaeology) at Yale University (New Haven). I received my License es lettres (BA) and Maitrise es letters (~MA) in History from the University of Toliara (Madagascar), my MA in Archaeology from the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and my MPhil in Anthropology from Yale University. I have certificates in “The Art of Music Production” and “The Technology of Music Production” courses from Berklee College of Music (Boston). Last but not least, I am a popular singer from Madagascar.
Before coming to Yale in 2013, I was a field instructor to college students at seven archaeological field schools under the auspices of the Université d’Antananarivo (Madagascar in 2007, 2011, 2012), Université des Comores (Comoros Islands in 2008, 2010), and University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania in 2009, 2011). In conjunction with my teaching years at Yale, I attended workshops offered at the Yale Center for Teaching and Learning. Among them, I found most useful the following: "Fundamentals of Teaching in Social Sciences", "Teaching as an International Student", "Promoting Gender Equality in the Classroom", and "Social Media in the Classroom". The skills and tips I learned from these workshops helped me lead class discussions and lab sections when I was a TA for Yale courses such as "Great Hoaxes and Fantasies in Archaeology" (Spring 2015), "Great Civilizations of the Ancient World" (Spring 2016), and "Human Ecology" (Spring 2017).
As a Language Partner at Yale Directed Independent Language Study (DILS) Program (2014-2017), I offered Malagasy lessons to Yale Graduate Students, assessed and certified their language proficiency.
As a Student Mentor at Yale Young African Scholars Program (2017-present), I am currently helping 3 African high schoolers (2 from Madagascar, and 1 from Uganda) to enhance their academic skills and guide them in their pathways to college admission and financial aid applications.
