Language Arts Tutor/ Mentor; Stanford graduate; offering an in-home, 8-step reading program for struggling readers in SF.

Methodology

My teaching method is simple and straightforward. First and foremost is my need to know the student I am working with, as much possible. Only then can I begin to create an environment of positivity and confidence in which the student has opportunities to succeed. He also has the chance to realize the work that goes into any worthwhile goal and embrace what it takes. I am with him all the way, supporting his efforts and reinforcing the importance of reading well. Virtually all academic growth depends upon reading ability.

Background

I have an extensive educational background, with a degree in Cultural Anthropology and an ongoing interest in improving the learning experience of today's youth. Specifically, I work with struggling readers, providing them with the opportunity to meet and overcome challenges, learn the vital importance of "practice " and relish the joy of success. Three of my last five years were spent as an Americorps reading volunteer in several SF elementary schools.

Donald's resume

My Bachelors Degree was in Cultural Anthropology from Stanford University. My special focus in my major was Early Childhood Development and a cross-cultural study of childrearing practices. I also have over 30 units of Post-Grad work --Painting and Drawing(CCAC) and Teacher Education(UCEB). I passed my CBEST and was issued an Emergency Teaching Credential in 1974. Some recent achievements of mine have to do with my tutoring work with Americorps. I was awarded three Certificates of Achievement,2015,2016,2017, for my intensive work with remedial readers, bringing them up to grade level and beyond.
