As a former librarian, my desire is to help intermediate and advanced young adults-high school, university and beyond-learn English through reading literature, which is authentic language. Students are able to look at cultural and historical events through the eyes of the main character. Besides discussing the story, we examine the way the author has conveyed meaning through the use of figurative language including idioms, slang, and dialect. Grammar points and vocabulary often sneak their way into the lesson. Students will also complete a writing prompt based on the story in order that they can apply what they have learned and I can see where they might be struggling.
I am a retired librarian with a passion to teach those who want to improve their English by reading short stories. I have a Masters in Education with a specialty in ESL and an online TESOL certificate. For more than 10 years, I have worked one-on-one and in groups with university students, mostly graduate, and their spouses during their sojourn in the United States. Most have wanted to get a more complete picture of the American culture and have appreciated reading stories to get that view. I have stayed in touch with many of my former tutees as they have returned to their home countries.
My rate is $30/hour. Introductory meeting is free.
My husband and I lived for more than a year in Croatia and, therefore, have experienced the challenges of adapting to a different language and culture.

Judi is my favorite ESL teacher. She is an intelligent and dedicated teacher and has a charming personality.
Because of her experience as a librarian, she has a deep knowledge of literature. As we have read and discussed various stories, I have expanded my vocabulary, and improved my writing while responding to writing prompts.
Her classes are always fascinating. I have enjoyed learning English and American literature thanks to our work together.
Judi and I met during our college years. She has been my wife and loving companion for nearly forty-eight years. From high school to the present, she has enjoyed cross-cultural relationships. During high school, Judi’s family hosted an exchange student from Ecuador. Her college roommate was from India, and throughout college she had friendships with students from the Middle East.
One of the reasons Judi completed a Master of Education in ESL is that she enjoys teaching and mentoring ESL students of all ages, one-on-one and in classroom settings. She prepares well for each session, and her students find their relationship with her to be fruitful. Several of them have stayed in touch with her even after their teacher/student relationship has ended.
