I am systematic with students learning a concept and then the next class we review the concept before adding a new one. This might involve a phonemic concept (such as "ea says the long e or later, the short e ) or a spelling rule such as when to drop or keep e or when to double the last concept in the word before adding a suffix. I might be teaching a syllable division patterns such as VCCV where I teach the students to break between the two consonants. There is much structure to the lesson as it includes a review section, visual, auditory, and blending drills (with nonsense words so the words cannot be memorized ). Then we have syllable division time , then a passage reading section, a rote word section, a dictation section, and generalized spelling which integrates all the spelling concepts that have been taught. The spelling and the reading work back to back to create a map on the brain and easier retrieval. It's like giving the brain GPS, because students who struggle to decode have an inefficient mental processor where they could see a word on a page and then not recognize that word later down the page. They might add or remove sounds when reading a word. For example, the student might read the word "steam" as "stream". All of this can be helped with enough practice! I will teach struggling readers ongoing and I can teach tutors for 2 weeks at a time.
I have been giving lessons for 10 years plus the work I did in the San Francisco School District assisting students with mild to moderate struggles in English/Reading/Writing paragraphs and essays. I can't even count how many students I've work with!
Elana has been working with my son for the last two years and has dramatically improved his reading and writing skills.
Whether we work in person at our house, at her house or on Zoom, she is able to keep him focused and on task. We have been very happy with his progress and he has gained an interest in reading on his own.
