In a nutshell, I teach the way YOU learn. I don't teach any two students the same way. As I get to know my students, I assess each one's learning style and what will work for him or her. I then focus on developing their strengths and helping them overcome their weaknesses. In some tutoring sessions I talk non-stop explaining concepts and illustrating ideas. In other sessions, I hardly talk at all, as my student works on the material I assign and I observe carefully, constantly ready to help when needed. I firmly believe that the person who does the work is the one who learns, and the student who explains a concept to me will retain it for longer and apply it better than the one who just listens to me.
I am a certified special educator with an aversion to schools as they are, but an enthusiastic passion for teaching. I have been tutoring full-time for the last 4 years, with students ranging from Kindergarten/1st grade all the way up to university students and adult lifelong learners. Whether you are an academically gifted student taking on the challenge of a new subject, or a learning-challenged (or learning-otherwise-enabled) student struggling with a frustrating but required subject, there are people like you who thank me for the success they achieved with my assistance.
If I accept a student who is particularly far away, I may add a distance charge, related more to travel time than to distance. My cancellation policy is 12 hours before the session: sessions cancelled at short notice will be billed at 1 hour's fee, unless there is generally accepted emergency situation (such as sudden illness or the like, identified as such at my discretion.)
I am a fully credentialed special education teacher with proven expertise teaching all grade-school subjects and many high school subjects, including math, reading, writing, the sciences, economics, and languages including Latin and Hebrew.

Maurice Samuel has tutored my daughter for seven years. She is dyslexic and Maurice works with the Wilson Reading Program as well as other methods to assist her. In addition, because Maurice's skill set is so diverse, he aids in her other subjects when the opportunity presents itself. I've come to know Maurice both professionally and personally. He is patient and comforting to his students. We are thankful for all that Maurice has done.
Maurice is a no-nonsense tutor with years of experience teaching both children and adults. He handles my AD/HD son with patience but without letting him get away with goofing off. My son has increased his understanding of HOW to read correctly instead of just having someone read WITH them. Maurice teaches a wide variety of subjects, and I know my son has benefited greatly under his tutelage. We've been using Maurice for about 5 years.
